SCSU Football Falls To Bentley

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football lost to Bentley, 34-21, in the Owls' Homecoming matchup in front of 4,218 fans at Jess Dow Field. With the loss, Southern dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the NE10 while Bentley improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Owls running back Kieran Falzon scored twice for Southern after totaling 70 yards on 10 carries. Brandon Jorgenson also rambled for a 10-yard touchdown and passed for 191 yards on 18-for-28 passing. Seth Westover led the Owls with 67 yards on five catches while Divine Edwards had six catches for 49 yards.


On defense. Rakaigh Pettway had a career-best eight tackles, a sack and broke up a pass at the line of scrimmage. LaRawn Robinson had seven tackles and a QB hurry while Peter Dempsey and TJ Butler both blocked point-after attempts.

Bentley jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring on a seven-play, 43 yard drive that left nine minutes in the first quarter. On the point after attempt, Butler powered through the line and blocked the field goal. Bentley made it 13-0 early in the second quarter.

After the Owls took control on Bentley's 47-yard line, Jorgenson connected with Jaylon Tucker for a 24-yard gain. Falzon then had runs of two yards and 11 yards to get the Owls down to Bentley's 10 where Jorgenson kept it himself to get the Owls on the board, 13-7.

Coming out of the break, the Owls took the lead after an 11-play, 83-yard drive. Jorgenson hit Edwards for a 13- yard gain before John Amaning broke off a 15-yard run. After an 11-yard catch by James Griffith, Jorgenson connected with Westover down the sideline for a 33-yard reception that put the Owls on Bentley's 11-yard line. Amaning had a five-yard run and a five-yard catch before leaving with an injury before Falzon scored from Bentley's 1-yard line to give Southern a 14-13 lead.

Bentley rallied and scored twice, once in the third and then with 11 minutes to play to take a 26-14 lead. Falzon opened the next drive with an eight-yard run before Edwards had a 13-yard catch. Falzon then ran for eight again and Jorgenson connected with Westover for 19 yards that got the Owls to the Bentley 25-yard line. Falzone found a hole on his next carry and took it 25 yards to pull the Owls within five points, 26-21. Bentley added another touchdown in the closing minutes to seal the win.

The Owls find themselves on the road for the next two weeks when they travel to Newark, Del. to take on Delaware State on Saturday, Oct. 11 and then at Pace on Saturday, Oct. 18. Southern returns home on Saturday, Oct. 25 to host Saint Anselm at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
