SCSU Baseball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader Against Saint Anselm

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut State University split its season-opening doubleheader against Saint Anselm in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a win in the first game, 7-3, before dropping the second game, 3-0. Both teams open at 1-1 on the season.

Jake Gruttadauria was 4-for-7 with a RBI and a run scored in the doubleheader while Jack Drewry and Brennan Staubley both homered in the first game. On the mound, Keegan Daigle got the win in relief after working three hitless, scoreless innings while striking out five. Steve Phillips took the no-decision after tossing six solid innings and finished with seven strikeouts.

Game 1
Saint Anselm took an early 3-0 lead behind a pair of home runs – a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo homerun in the second. In the bottom of the second, Drewry led off the inning with a solo shot before Staubley connected for his first as an Owl with two outs in the inning.

Phillips meanwhile had settled in on the mound, allowing just four base runners over the next four innings and holding the Hawks scoreless before handing the ball over to Daigle. In the bottom of the seventh, Staubley led off with a single before Gruttadauria drove him in with a two-out single. Chad Fedeli then doubled to score Gruttadauria and give the Owls a 4-3 lead.

Southern pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the eighth. Drewry led off with a walk followed by back-to-back singles by Izaiah Walker and Patrick Dillon, with Dillon's scoring Drewry. Staubley then moved the runners over before Derrick Jagello was hit by a pitch. Jake Chacho hit a sacrifice fly to score Walker and give Southern a 6-3 lead before Dillon scored on a wild pitch.

Game 2
The second game of the double feature tilted towards Saint Anselm as the Owls were held to a single hit. Gruttadauria broke up the Saint Anselm no-hit bid in the sixth inning. The Owls had the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh, but could not capitalize.

Spencer Fox took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over six innings. Chad Fedeli pitched a perfect seventh, striking out all three batters he faced.

Southern and Saint Anselm will meet again on Sunday, Feb. 16 with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Myrtle Beach High School.
