SCSU Baseball Falls To Saint Anselm, 7-4, In Rain-Shortened Game

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Saint Anselm, 7-4, in a rain-shortened game that was called after five innings in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the loss Southern dropped to 1-2 on the weekend while Saint Anselm improved to 2-1. The fourth game of the weekend series was canceled due to rain.

Brennan Staubley connected for his second home run of the season with a two-run blast in the second inning that gave the Owls a 2-0 lead. Patrick Dillon worked a one-out walk before Staubley gave the Owls the early lead.

In the third, Jake Gruttadauria walked to lead off the inning before Chad Fedeli reached on an error. After a strike out, Jack Drewry roped a single that scored Gruttadauria to give Southern a 3-0 lead. Saint Anselm answered in the bottom half of the inning when they pushed two unearned runs across to cut Southern's lead to one run, 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Anselm took a 4-3 lead by virtue of a two-run homer. In the top of the fifth, Devin Pelletier walked to lead off the inning before the next two Owls hitters were retired. Patrick Dillon then stroked a two-out single to score Pelletier and tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Anselm put two runners on before freshman pitcher Harry Roy replaced Collin Blake on the hill for the Owls. Roy retired the first hitter before walking the next batter to load the bases. Another walk pushed the go-ahead run across before a single scored two more runs to give the Hawks the lead. The game was called after the final out of the inning.

Southern will head back to Myrtle Beach, S.C. next weekend to face Staten Island on Friday, Feb. 21, Felician on Saturday, Feb. 22 and Wilmington on Sunday, Feb. 23 at The Ripken Experience.
