SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Felician

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a non-conference doubleheader against Felician at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Owls dropped the first game, 10-5, before bouncing back with a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Through their first six games Southern stands at 3-3 while Felician is 2-4.

In the first game, Southern fell behind early, 6-0, after allowing three runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. In the bottom of the third, Southern cut Felican's lead in half with a three-run inning. Brennan Staubley reached on an error and then scored on Derrick Jagello's triple. Spencer Chard then doubled to score Jagello before Jake Gruttadauria singled Chard home to make it 6-3.

Felician tacked on two more runs in the top of the 4th inning and another in the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th, Southern plated two more runs when Auggie Albert reached on an error by the Felician leftfielder that allowed Gruttadauria and Patrick Dillon to score. Felician scored again in the 9th to seal the 10-5 win.

Gruttadauria was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored in the game. Spencer Fox took the loss after allowing eight runs – only three of which were earned – over four innings while striking out six. Trace Morales scattered three hits over three innings of work while allowing one run while Jaylen Cruz worked the last two innings, giving up a solo home run as his only hit allowed.

In the second game, Chad Fedeli improved to 2-0 on the mound on the young season after holding Felician to two runs on six hits over five innings before exiting with the lead. Keegan Daigle pitched the last two innings to earn the save. At the plate, freshman catcher Brady Chernovetz was 2-for-2 in his collegiate debut while Izaiah Walker also collected two hits.

After Felician took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Owls' bats erupted with a five-run 5th inning. Walker doubled to lead off the inning before scoring on a base hit by Devin Pelletier. After Chernovetz bunted Pelletier over, Jagello singled to score Pelletier and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Chard followed with a single before Dillon blasted a three-run homer to give Southern a 5-1 lead.

Felician scored once in the 5th and then twice in the 6th but pitched out of a two-hit single and walk in the 7th to get the final batter of the game to pop up for the save.

Southern wraps up it's trip to Myrtle Beach when it faces Wilmington on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. at The Ripken Experience's Griffith Field.
