SCSU Baseball Defeats Wilmington, 12-3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball topped Wilmington, 12-3, in a non-conference matchup at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the win, the Owls improved to 4-3 overall while Wilmington dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Colin Blake, a graduate transfer from University of Hartford, making his first career start for the Owls dazzled on the mound. The first-year Owl logged seven scoreless innings, scattering two hits before handing the ball off to Payton Powell who picked up the two-inning save. At the plate, Spencer Chard was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and also drew two walks to reach base in six trips to the plate. Chad Fedeli had a two-run triple as part of a 2-for-4 in which he drove in four runs for the afternoon. Patrick Dillon was 3-for-5 while Jake Gruttadauria drove in two runs. Zack Nakonechny also collected two hits and rove in a run.

Nakonechny led off the third with a double before Derrick Jagello bunted him over. Chard then singled to score Nakonechny with the game's first run. In the 4th, Nakonechny drove in Patrick Dillon to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Southern pushed across two more runs in the 5th after Chard's lead-off double led to a run on a Gruttadauria single. Dillon then drove Gruttadauria in to give Southern a 4-0 lead.

In the 6th, Brennan Staubley walked to lead off the inning before Nakonechny was retired and Jagello and Chard walked to load the bases. Fedeli then singled to score Jagello and Staubley before Gruttadauria drove in Chard as the Owls took a 7-0 lead. The Owls made it 11-0 with a four-run 7th when Staubley doubled home Izaiah Walker before Chard drove in Staubley. With Jagello and Chard on base, Fedeli roped a triple to score both runs for the four-run inning. Southern added another run in the 8th.

Powell entered the game in the top of the 8th for the Owls and allowed Wilmington's three runs, two of which came on a pinch-hit home run in the 9th.

Southern is slated to open its home schedule on Saturday, Mar. 1 when Mercy comes to The Ballpark at SCSU for a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start before the Owls head to Mercy on Sunday, Mar. 2 for a pair.
