SCSU Baseball Falls To Mercy, 9-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Mercy, 9-4, in the Owls' home opener at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 9-4 overall while Mercy improved to 10-8.

Derrick Jagello blasted a second inning grand slam to give the Owls an early 4-0 lead. It was Jagello's first home run of the season and the second of his career. It stood as the Owls' only offense of the afternoon. Jake Chacho was also 2-for-4 with a run scored. Spencer Chard was 1-for-4 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to 10 games.
 


Spencer Fox took the no decision after pitching 5 1/3 solid innings. Fox had six strikeouts and gave up just three hits before leaving with two runners on base. Harry Roy took the loss on the mound after giving up five runs – three earned – over 2 1/3 before Payton Powell gave up one run on one hit in 1 1/3 to finish the game for Southern.

Southern is back in action on Thursday, March 20 when it travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on American International in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. The Owls then open Northeast-10 Conference play when they host Saint Michael's on Saturday, March 22 and Franklin Pierce on Sunday, March 23.
