SCSU Baseball Defeats AIC, 10-4

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball defeated American International, 10-4, in a non-conference matchup in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Owls improved to 10-4 while AIC dropped to 5-7 overall.


Izaiah Walker was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored while Derrick Jagello was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jake Chacho also had two hits with a RBI and two runs scored while Brennan Staubley was 1-for-3 with two walks, a double and two runs scored. On the mound, Chad Fedeli improved to 4-0 after holding the Yellowjackets to one run on four hits while striking out five over five innings. Jayden Cruz picked up the three-inning save.

AIC got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. In the 5th, Jack Drewry led off with a walk and then moved to second on Walker's one-out single. After Staubley walked to load the bases, the next batter was retired before Jagello delivered a two-out single that scored Walker and Drewry to give the Owls the lead. Staubley scored on a throwing error on a ball hit by Spencer Chard before Patrick Dillon, Jake Gruttadauria and Drewry all walked to push three more runs across.

In the 5th, Staubley lined a two-out double before scoring on a triple by Chacho. Jagello then drove Chacho in to give the Owls a 7-1 lead. Walked picked up another RBI in the 6th. Drewry singled with two outs before Augie Albert walked. Walker then drove the ball to left to score Drewry as the Owls' lead increased to seven runs, 8-1.

AIC cut the Owls' lead in half, 8-4, with a three-run 6th inning. In the 7th, Chacho walked to lead off the inning before Jagello bunted him into scoring position. Chard then doubled to move Chacho to third. Both runners scored on wild pitches before AIC retired the inning. Cruz wrapped up the day with a scoreless 7th and 8th to seal the Owls' win in the darkness-shortened eight-inning matchup.

Southern is in action this weekend when it opens Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, March 22 against St. Michael's and Sunday, March 23 against Franklin Pierce. Both doubleheaders at The Ballpark at SCSU are scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
