SCSU Baseball Opens NE10 Play With Split Against St. Michael's

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball split its first Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader of the season, losing to Saint Michael's, 7-4, before bouncing back with a 12-1 win in the nightcap. Southern is now 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the NE10 while the Purple Knights are 2-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Jace Alvino picked up his first career win with a complete game in the back end of the twin bill. Alvino held Saint Michael's to one run while scattering six hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Jake Gruttadauria had four this in the doubleheader while he also had a 3-for-3 showing in the second game with two RBI and three runs scored. Izaiah Walker was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the first game.

GAME 1: SAINT MICHAEL'S 7, SCSU 4
After Saint Michael's took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat, Southern pushed two runs across in the bottom of the 2nd. Walker singled with one out before Brennan Staubley was hit by a pitch. Jake Chacho then singled Walker home before Derrick Jagello reached on an error that allowed Staubley to score and give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

The Purple Knights scored twice in the top of the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead and again in the 4th to push their lead to 4-2. Southern got a run back in the bottom of the 4th when back-to-back wild pitch allowed him to cross and make it 4-3, but Saint Michael's scored twice in its next at-bat to take a 6-3 lead.

In the 5th, Walker walked to lead off the inning before scoring on a double by Chacho to make it 6-4. Trace Morales replaced Spencer Fox on the hill and pitched two solid innings in relief before giving way to Brandon San Marco. Morales gave up a run on four hits over two innings while San Marco gave up a run on two hits over the final three innings.

GAME 2: SOUTHERN 12, SAINT MICHAEL'S 1
Alvino, despite give up a pair of hits in the 1st and allowed runners on base, was masterful in maneuvering through the Purple Knights' lineup. The game, schedule for seven innings, was scoreless through 3 ½ innings before the Owls scored twice in the bottom of the 4th.

In the 4th, Chad Fedeli walked to lead off the inning before Gruttadauria broke up the no-hitter when he reached on a bunt. Gruttadauria dropped down a perfect sacrifice to move Fedeli into scoring position, but beat the throw to the bag, which was misplayed by the covering second baseman for an error that allowed Fedeli to go to third and Gruttadauria to move to second. Drewry then hit a ground ball to second that was misplayed, allowing both runners to cross.

After Saint Michael's got a run back in the top of the 5th, Alvino retired the next seven batters he faced to cool off the Purple Knights' offense. In the bottom of the 6th, Southern erupted for 10 runs on six hits. Gruttadauria – who had two hits in the inning – led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice before Patrick Dillon's fly ball scored him from third. The next two batters walked and moved up on a passed before before Staubley walked to load the bases. Chacho was walked to force a run in then another passed ball allowed Walker to score. Zak Droukas came up with a pinch-hit singled that scored two runs before Gruttadauria singled to drive in two more. Dillon then doubled to drive in two more runs for the Owls.

Southern returns to action on Sunday, March 22 when it hosts Franklin Pierce for a NE10 doubleheader set for 12 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
