SCSU Baseball Complete NE10 Opening Week With Sweep Of Franklin Pierce

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Frankin Pierce, winning 9-3 and 9-2, at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the sweep, the Owls improved to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in NE10 play while Franklin Pierce dropped to 2-2 in the NE10 and 10-13 overall.

Patrick Dillon and Izaiah Walker both had three hits in the doubleheader while Dillon drove in four runs. Chad Fedeli also had four RBI and three runs scored in the twin bill. Colin Blake improved to 3-1 on the year after holding Franklin Pierce to three runs over eight innings on five hits while striking out five. Steve Phillips took the no-decision despite a solid game. In the second game after holding the Ravens to a run on four hits over 4 1/3. Payton Powell pitched in both games and earned his first win of the season in Game 2.

GAME 1: SCSU 9, Franklin Pierce 3
Southern put a run across in its first at-bat when Jack Drewry hit a line drive to left field that dropped for a hit but was misplayed by the leftfielder, allowing Jake Gruttadauria to score from first. In the 2nd, Walker singled to lead off the inning before Brennan Staubley walked. After the next two batters were retired, Spencer Chard singled to load the bases before Chad Fedeli hit a towering shot to right-center field for a base-clearing triple to give Southern a 4-0 lead. Fedeli made it 5-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.

Franklin Pierce manufactured a run in the top of the 3rd to cut Southern's lead to 5-1. In the 4th, Fedeli reached on an error followed by another error on Gruttadauria's ground ball to second that allowed Fedeli to score. Dillon the singled home Gruttadauria to give the home team the 7-1 lead. FPU scored twice in the 6th to make it 7-3. In the 7th, Southern scraped together two more runs.

GAME 2: SCSU 9, Franklin Pierce 2
Southern picked up where they left off from the first game as they scored twice in the bottom of the 1st. Chard singled and stole second before Fedeli flied out and Gruttadauria walked. Jack Drewry then singled before Dillon delivered a two-run singled to left to give the Owls the early lead, 2-0.

Phillips worked his way through the Franklin Pierce lineup, holding the Ravens scoreless through the first four innings. In the top of the 5th, he retired the first batter and then gave up a hit, which brought Powell into the game. Franklin Pierce was able to score twice off Powell to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the 7th, Southern exploded for seven runs on three hits to take a 9-2 lead. Brady Chernovitz was credited with an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Derrick Jagello's ground ball to third scored Walker. Chard was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Fedeli's reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Gruttadauria then roped a two-out single that drove in two more runs before scoring on a RBI single by Dillon.

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, March 25 when it travels to West Haven, Conn. to take on University of New Haven at 3 p.m.
