SCSU Softball Sweeps Molloy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut softball team swept non-conference opponent Molloy winning game one 7-4, and a comeback win in Game 2, 7-4. The first time these two teams met was in Viera, Fla. at the Space Coast Spring Games where the teams split in their doubleheader. The Owls improve to 11-7 and the Lions go to 8-16. 

Ashley Lewis got the win in Game 1, pitching five innings while allowing one hit and striking out eight. Olivia Young took the no-decision in Game 2 while Giselle DeLutri got the win pitching three innings allowing five hits and one run. 

Izzy Ingersoll went 5-for-8 with four RBIs and two runs scored while Rachel Miller was 4-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophia Angiolini was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored. Dominique DeLutri was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a double, and Cassidy Sullivan was 3-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

GAME 1: SCSU 7, MOL 4
The Owls tacked on a run in every inning but the 6th, not letting up against this Molloy squad. Karley Austin was 1-for-2 with two RBIs while Dominique DeLutri went 2-for-2 in the game and Nadia Cestari added a hit. 

In the bottom of the 1st, Izzy Ingersoll led off with a single through the right and then Nicole Spinelli moved her over to second. Rachel Miller came up to hit a single to center field to bring in Ingersoll.

Karley Austin brought in two runs in the bottom of the 2nd after hitting a single to center field to bring in Dominique DeLutri and Nadia Cestari who reached on a hit-by-pitch and a single, respectively. 

After Olivia Young walked to start the 3rd, she advanced to third on a single from Cassidy Sullivan and was then brought home on a sacrifice fly from Sophia Angiolini

Similar to the 1st inning, in the 4th, Ingersoll led off with a hit up the middle and was then moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Austin. She then scored when Miller hit a line drive to center field. 

After reaching on an error in the 5th, Sullivan scored off of a single down the right field line from Angiolini. Marissa Correra was then put in to pinch run, stole a base, and ended up scoring on a single from Ingersoll. The Lions of Molloy threatened in the top of the 6th but could not overcome the runs the Owls had put up.

GAME 2: SCSU 7, MOL 5
The Owls came back from a 4 to 0 deficit to win this one. Samantha LaFemina was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while DeAnna DeCaro had a double. 

Molloy put 3 runs up in the second inning before adding a fourth in the 3rd. The Owls then scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the 3rd. DeCaro doubled before Spinelli singled to get two on the bases. Cheyenne LaTouche was put in as a pinch runner before Miller had a hit to load the bases. Young then brought in DeCaro and then Sullivan brought in LaTouche and Miller. 

In the 4th, LaFemina hit a single to right field before advancing on a wild pitch for Ingersoll to come up and hit her home. 

It was LaFemina and Ingersoll again in the 5th inning when LaFemina brought in Sullivan and Ingersoll knocked in DeLutri and Angiolini. 

Molloy put up another run and looked to add more in the 6th but could not get past Giselle DeLutri in the circle. 

The Owls will travel to Springfield, Mass. tomorrow, Mar. 29 for the first conference doubleheader against American International.
