SCSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball split a non-conference doubleheader at Post. The Owls lost the first game, 13-10, before bouncing back with a 13-2 win in the second game. With the split, the Owls moved to 14-9 on the season.

Brennan Staubley was 6-for-10 for the twin bill with six RBI, three doubles and three runs scored while Jack Drewry was 4-for-9 with six RBI. Chad Fedeli was also 4-for-9 with six runs scored and four RBI.



GAME 1
Brennan Staubley was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI as well as a run scored while Derrick Jagello was 4-for-5 with a RBI. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored while Jack Drewry was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Izaiah Walker and Zak Droukas also had two hits.

Fedeli led off the game with a single before Staubley followed with a RBI double to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning, Walker and Droukas stung back-to-back one-out singles before moving into scoring position on a balk. After a strike out, Fedeli singled in both runs to give Southern a 3-0 lead. The Owls tacked on two more runs in the inning on a RBI double by Staubley, who scored on a single by Jake Gruttadauria.

In the 3rd, Auggie Albert singled with one out and moved to second on a single by Walker. After Droukas flew out to center to move Albert to third. He scored on an attempted steal by Walker to give Southern a 6-0 lead.

The bottom of the 3rd proved to be the trouble spot for the Owls as Post answered with eight runs to take a two-run lead. They increased their lead with a run in the 4th and 5th and held a 10-6 advantage heading to the 6th. In the 6th, Droukas led off with a double before scoring on a single by Derrick Jagello. Post increased their lead with a three-run 7th, 13-7.

In the 8th, Jagello singled with one out before Fedeli walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Staubley's ground ball to short scored Jagello before Gruttadauria walked. Drewry then roped a two-run double to left to score Fedeli and Gruttadauria as the Owls cut the Eagles' lead to 13-10.

GAME 2
Staubley was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while Drewry drove in four runs. Fedeli was also 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Steve Philips picked up the win after holding Post to two runs on five hits over six innings while Keegan Daigle pitched a scoreless 7th.

Southern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 3rd when Fedeli's double scored Jagello before Gruttaduaria singled home Fedeli. Post tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the 4th.

In the top of the 5th, Droukas led off with a single before Aidan Hyams sacrificed him over. Jagello then doubled home Droukas to give the Owls a 3-2 lead. After Fedeli was hit by a pitch, Staubley singled up the middle to score Jagello, followed by a walk by Gruttadauria to load the bases. Drewry then drove in Fedeli and Staubley with a single. Patrick Dillon walked, setting up Albert with the sacrifice fly as the Owls took a 8-2 lead. Southern pushed five more runs across in the top of the 7th with Fedeli driving in a run before Staubley picked up two more RBI on a single. Drewry then drove in two mores to give the Owls a 13-2 lead.

Southern is back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 2 when it heads to West Haven to take on University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 3 p.m.
