SCSU Baseball Sweeps Bridgeport, 6-5 and 12-5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball swept a doubleheader against Bridgeport, 6-5 and 12-5, at Myrtle Beach High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the two wins, Southern ran its winning streak to five games and improved to 7-3 while Bridgeport dropped to 2-9 on the season.

Game 1: SCSU 6, Bridgeport 5
In the first game, Chad Fedeli was 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored as well as a RBI while Jake Gruttadauria and Patrick Dillon both drove in runs for the Owls. Spencer Chard and Brennan Staubley scored twice for Southern.

The Owls showed resilience as they overcame two Bridgeport leads to pull out the one-run victory. After falling behind, 2-0 after the 1st inning, Southern pushed three runs across in the bottom of the 2nd. Brennan Staubley walked with one out before Spencer Chard drew a walk with two outs. After Chad Fedeli walked to load the bases, all three came around on a hard hit ball to second by Jake Gruttadauria that was misplayed.

Bridgeport answered in the 3rd as they tied the game at 3-3 and took a 4-3 lead in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Chard led off with a double before Fedeli walked. Gruttadauria then singled to center to score Chard and tie it at 4-4. After Jack Drewry bunted Fedeli and Gruttadauria over, Patrick Dillon's ground ball to short scored Fedeli to give Southern a 5-4 lead. Fedeli drove in Staubley with a single in the 5th to give the Owls a 6-4 lead.

Brandon San Marco relieved Spencer Fox who picked up his first win of the season. Fox gave up four runs – three earned – on five hits over five innings. San Marco pitched an inning, giving up a run on three hits before handing the ball to Payton Powell in the top of the 7th with the lead off runner on base. Powell struck out two batters in the inning to hold Bridgeport scoreless and secure his second save of the season.

Game 2 – SCSU 12, Bridgeport 5
Southern struck early and never trailed to the Purple Knights. The Owls' first two batters of the game – Chard and Dillon – opened with back-to-back home runs. Gruttadauria followed with a double and then scored on a ball hit by Devin Pelletier before Pelletier scored on a single by Izaiah Walker to give Southern an early 4-0 lead.

Dillon was 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored as well as a stolen base. Jake Chacho was 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs scored while Chard also homered.

The Owls made it 7-0 off a pair of RBI singles by Gruttadauria and Jack Drewry in the bottom the 2nd. Bridgeport chipped away at the Owls lead over the next two innings, pulling within two runs, 7-5, through the top of the 4th. In the bottom half of the inning, Jake Chacho led off with a homer to center field to give the Owls an 8-5 lead. After Chard was retired, Dillon connected for his second home run of the day to give Southern a 9-5 lead.

In the 6th, Chacho walked to lead off the inning before scoring on a single by Dillon. After Gruttadauria was retired, Drewry was hit by a pitch. Fedeli put the ball in play to score Chard before Dillon stole home to give the Owls a 12-5 decision.
