SCSU Baseball Sweeps Bridgeport, 12-5 and 11-0; Dillon Homers Three Times

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball swept the final two games of its four-game set against University of Bridgeport, 12-5 and 11-0, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Owls took all four games in the series to run its winning streak to seven games and improve to 9-3 on the year.
 
Patrick Dillon homered three times in the twin bill, including a pair in the second game of the series. Izaiah Walker homered in both games, while Auggie Albert, Jake Chacho and Jack Drewry also hit home runs. Albert was 4-for-6 with three runs scored for the day while Dillon was 4-for-8 with three home runs, four runs scored and eight RBI. Walker was also 4-for-8 and drove in six runs while Spencer Chard was 4-for-8 with four runs scored.
 
On the mound, Colin Blake spun a complete game shutout in Game 2 that including nine strikeouts and two hits allowed over seven innings to improve to 1-1 on the year. Chad Fedeli picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the year in the first game after striking out eight over five innings. He also has 15 strikeouts in his last 15 innings pitched.
 
Game 1:  SCSU 12, Bridgeport 5
Albert put the Owls on the board with his first career home run in the second inning. The Owls tacked on another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Bridgeport answered in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run homer to take a 3-2 advantage.
 
Derrick Jagello drove in a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game before Bridgeport answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the fifth, Dillon stroked a one-out homer over the left field wall to pull the Owls within a run before Jack Drewry delivered a two-out single. Albert was then hit by a pitch before Walker singled to score Drewry and tie the game.
 
In the sixth, Jagello singled to start the inning before Dillon drove him in. Jake Gruttadauria doubled to score Spencer Chard and put runners on second and third, setting up Albert to be intentionally walked. Walker made it hurt with a grand slam to give Southern the 11-5 lead. Walker was 3-for-4 with five RBI for the game. Jayden Cruz pitched the final two innings in relief of Chad Fedeli. Cruz held Bridgeport hitless and scoreless while striking out three while Fedeli finished the day with eight strikeouts and five hits allowed over five innings.
 
Game 2: SCSU 11, Bridgeport 0
The Owls kicked off the second game of the doubleheader with a Chard leadoff single before Dillon connected for his second home run of the day to give Southern a 2-0 lead. In the second, Walker and Chacho homered back-to-back to lead off the inning and gave Southern a 4-0 lead before the Owls pushed two more runs across in the inning.
 
In the sixth, Jagello drew a two-out walk before Chard singled to keep the inning going. Dillon then blasted his second homer of the game – a three-run shot – that gave the Owls a 9-0 lead. Gruttadauria singled after Dillon and Drewry connected for his third home run of the season to give the Owls the 11-0 decision.
 
Blake continued to dominate the opposition as he retired seven-straight batters from the fourth inning to the sixth and then the last four batters he faced on the afternoon. Blake has now given up just one run – which was unearned – in his last 18 innings  pitched whiles striking out 13 over his last three appearances.
 
Southern is back in action with its home opener set for Wednesday, March 12 against Mercy at 3 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
