SCSU Baseball Drops Doubleheader At Southern New Hampshire

Southern Connecticut State University baseball lost to Southern New Hampshire, 6-4 and 5-2, in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader in Manchester, N.H. With the losses, Southern dropped to 17-13 overall and 6-6 in the NE10 while SNHU improved to 20-11 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

GAME 1
Izaiah Walker was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Patrick Dillon was 1-for-5 with a triple.

Southern took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Patrick Dillon blasted a one-out triple before scoring on a RBI by Izaiah Walker. In the 7th, Jack Drewry singled before moving to third on Dillon's hard hit ball to third that was misplayed for an error.  Walker then lined a single up the middle to score both runners and give Southern a 3-0 lead. Zak Droukas bunted Walker to second before Walker stole third base. Alex Cappellucci then worked a five-pitch walk to put runners on the corners.

Derrick Jagello then dropped down his NE10-leading 10th sacrifice bunt of the year to move Cappellucci to second base and score Walker to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Owls starter Colin Blake was throwing a gem. The first-year Owl help SNHU scoreless over six innings before departing the game after a pair of batters reach in the 7th.  SNHU greeted reliever Keegan Daigle with a three-run homer to cut the Owls' lead to 4-3. Blake's stat line read 6 1/3 innings pitched with two runs allowed on three hits.

Spencer Fox came into the game in the 8th to relieve Daigle. In the 9th, with the Owls leading by a run, Fox retired the first batter before walking the second batter. The next batter bunted the runner to second before a base hit scored the game-tying run. After Fox hit a batter with a pitcher, he induced the inning-ending double play to send the game to extra innings.

In the 10th, Harry Roy came on to pitch for the Owls and attacked the Penmen's strike zone, striking out the side to send the game to the 11th. In the 12th, SNHU was able to get a runner on base before Roy retired the next two batters. With two away, SNHU home run leader Jackson Marshall connected for a two-run homer to give the Penmen the win.

GAME 2
Southern was being no-hit in the second game through four innings before Dillon led off the 5th with a single through the left side of the infield. In the 6th, Droukas was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Jagello doubled to put runners on second and third. After the next batter was retired, Brennan Staubley walked and Droukas scored on the wild pitch. A second wild pitch allowed Jagello to score to cut SNHU's lead in half, 4-2. Southern New Hampshire responded with a run in the 6th to seal the win.

Southern is back in action this weekend with a four-game series against American International on Friday, Apr. 18 and Saturday, Apr. 19. The first three games of the series will count for the NE10 standings while the final game will land as a non-conference game.
