SCSU Baseball Splits with American International

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut baseball team split with American International winning the first game 15-13, and losing the second 24-7. The Owls are now 18-14 overall and 7-7 in the Northeast-10 while AIC goes to 13-15 overall and 7-7 in the conference. 

Spencer Chard was 7-for-10 with six runs scored, three RBIs, and a solo home run. Brennan Staubley was 3-for-8 with four runs scored, three doubles, and two RBIs. Jake Gruttadauria was 3-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBIs. 

Colin Blake got the win in Game 1, improving to 4-3 after pitching two innings and only allowing three hits and a run. Steve Phillips took the loss in Game 2, after allowing five hits and four runs. 



GAME 1: SCSU 15, AIC 13
In Game 1, Patrick Dillon was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a double. Zakary Droukas and Derrick Jagello were both 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Jagello added an RBI. 

The Owls scored in the bottom of the 1st after Spencer Chard led off with a single before Patrick Dillon brought him home with a single to center field. AIC equalized and took the lead quickly after in the top of the 2nd. 

In the bottom of the 3rd, Jake Gruttadauria singled and then came home on a Yellow Jackets error to make it 2-2. AIC put up two more runs in the top of the 4th. 

Brennan Staubley doubled to centerfield before Dillon doubled to score Staubley for another RBI. Right on que, AIC put up another run to make the lead 5-3.

The Owls exploded in the bottom of the 6th with an eight-run inning. Jake Chacho reached on an error before Zakary Droukas doubled for Derrick Jagello to bring in a run. Chard then singled to bring in Droukas before Staubley reached on an error to bring in Jagello. Chard scored the the fourth run of the inning after a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Izaiah Walker singled to bring in both Staubley and Gruttadauria. After a new pitcher was brought in, the Owls were able to push one more run across before finishing the inning.

Southern Connecticut added another run in the bottom of the 7th to lead 12-5 after Gruttadauria scored on a single from Walker. AIC then had a big inning in the top of the 8th, scoring seven runs to tie the game. 

In the bottom of the 8th, Droukas got on with a leadoff walk and then Jagello reached base on an error before Chard singled to bring in a run. After the next batter was retired, Gruttadauria singled to bring in Jagello and Chard to lead 15-12. The Yellowjackets scored two more in the top of the 9th but could not overcome the pitching of Colin Blake

GAME 2: SCSU 7, AIC 24
In Game 2, Jack Drewry was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Auggie Albert was 1-for-2 with an RBI. 

After a scoreless two innings, the Yellow Jackets put up nine runs in the top of the 3rd. The Owls started to chip away in the bottom of the inning when Spencer Chard singled and was the brought in on a double from Brennan Staubley. Jake Gruttadauria then singled to bring in Staubley. 

The Yellowjackets added five more in the top of the 4th to bring their lead to 14-2. In the bottom of the 4th, Izaiah Walker singled and then advanced bags on a balk and wild pitch before making his way home. 

In the 7th, both teams scored two more runs. Auggie Albert had his first at bat of the game and recorded an RBI after bringing in Alex Cappellucci who singled to start the inning. Jack Drewry then hit a sacrifice fly to score Chard.

The Yellow Jackets scored three more in the top of the 8th before scoring five more in the 9th to extend the lead 24-6. Chard then homered in the top of the 9th to make the final score 24-7. 


The Owls will play another doubleheader against AIC tomorrow, Apr. 19.
