MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut softball fell to Saint Anselm, 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader was halted, with the Hawks leading 3-1 over the Owls. No make-up date has been set yet for the second game's conclusion. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 13-12, and an NE10 record of 2-5. The Hawks improved to an overall record of 18-10 and an NE10 record of 7-4.
In the first game,
Dominique DeLutri recorded two hits, with
Karley Austin,
Izzy Ingersoll,
Rachel Miller and
Kayla Wakely all recorded a hit.
Rachel Miller had her 100
th career hit against the Hawks in the first game.
Ashley Lewis struck out two, while allowing five hits and two runs.
In the second game, through the top of the fourth,
Izzy Ingersoll and
Cassidy Sullivan both were 1-for-2, as Sullivan scored a run too. In the circle,
Giselle DeLutri was throwing well for Southern Connecticut as she only allowed three runs, a hit and struck out six batters.
GAME 1: SCSU 2, SAINT ANSELM 3 (7 INNINGS)
Dominique DeLutri led the Owls with two hits, including a double, as
Karley Austin,
Izzy Ingersoll (RBI),
Rachel Miller and
Kayla Wakely each had a hit. In the circle,
Ashley Lewis allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out two batters.
In the first inning,
Karley Austin singled to left field to start the Owls off. After that, she stole second as Ingersoll singled to left center, which brought Austin home for the first run of the game. Next up in the order,
Rachel Miller singled to center field, as she recorded her 100
th career hit. In the bottom of the first, the Hawks put up two runs on the board, to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning,
Olivia Young reached first on a walk then
Dominique DeLutri doubled to left center as Young advanced to third. However, the Hawks' defense came up big with the score still set at 2-1.
In the top of the seventh,
Cassidy Sullivan reached first, due to a fielding error. Then, Sullivan reached second due to a passed ball as Wakely, who was pinch hitting for Correra, hit a single towards the circle when Sullivan made it to third. Correra came back in to advance to second as Austin hit a ground out. Saint Anselm threw a wild pitch, as Sullivan advanced home and Correra made it to third. Southern cut the Hawks' lead to 3-2, with a chance to send Correra home but Saint Anselm held on to clinch a 3-2 victory over the Owls.
GAME 2: SCSU 1, SAINT ANSELM 3 (GAME HALTED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH)
Cassidy Sullivan and
Izzy Ingersoll both went 1-for-2, as Sullivan scored a run, through the top of the fourth. In the circle,
Giselle DeLutri was throwing well for Southern as she only allowed three runs, one hit and struck out six batters.
In the top of the second, Southern Connecticut got in scoring position early with a single into center field by Sullivan. With two ground outs by Wakely and LaFemina, Sullivan advanced to third. Austin advanced to first, due to a fielding error, which sent Sullivan across home plate for a one-run lead. In the bottom of the third, the Hawks put three runs away, as they took a 3-1 lead. The game was halted in the bottom of the fourth inning, with no make-up set.
The Owls will return to action at Pelz Field on Friday, April 18 against NE10 opponent, Adelphi University, in a doubleheader, starting at 2:30 p.m.
