SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Twin Bill At Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast-10 Conference interdivision doubleheader at Bentley, falling 8-2 in the first game before winning 4-3 in the second game. With the split, Southern goes to 23-15 overall and 11-8 in the NE10 while Bentley goes to 27-16 overall and 14-6 in conference play.

Jack Drewry led the Owls' offense with four hits while Patrick Dillon had three hits for the afternoon. Izaiah Walker had two hits in the doubleheader and scored the game-winning run in the second game. Jace Alvino improved to 2-2 on the season while Steve Phillips picked up his third save.



GAME 1: Bentley 8, SCSU 2
Jack Drewry was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Izaiah Walker was 1-for-2 with a RBI. Harry Roy took the loss after allowing six runs over 5 1/3.

Bentley struck for three runs in their first at-bat before Southern cut the Falcons' lead to one with a two-run 2nd inning. Drewry led off with a single and went to second on a hit by Patrick Dillon before Izaiah Walker singled to drive in Drewry before Dillon scored on an error by the Falcons' left fielder.

GAME 2: SCSU 4, Bentley 3, 8 Inn.
In the second game, Jake Gruttadauria, Drewry and Dillon all had two hits each while Gruttadauria drove in a run. Dillon had two RBI while Brady Chernovetz was 1-for-2 and drove in Walker with the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th.

In the top of the 1st, Spencer Chard reached when he was hit by a pitch before Brennan Staubley singled through the left side of the infield. Gruttadauria then doubled to right to score Chard before Dillon singled to center to score Staubley and Gruttadauria to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

A pair of errors led to two of Bentley's three runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Owls freshman starter Jace Alvino turned in another impressive performance as he held Bentley to one earned run on six hits over seven innings. Steve Phillips picked up the save with a scoreless 8th inning.

In the top of the 8th, Walker led off with a line drive to center for a hit before moving to second on a wild pitch. After Chad Fedeli walked, Walker stole third for Chernovetz. The first-year Owl worked the count before driving a ball to left, deep enough to score Walker with the go-ahead run. Phillips pitched the bottom half of the inning, allowing a hit but holding Bentley at arm's length.

The Owls continue NE10 play on Sunday, April 27 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
