Drewry, Phillips Hit Milestones As SCSU Baseball Splits With Assumption

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut baseball split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Assumption, losing the first game 16-8 before bouncing back with a 7-4 win in the second game. With the split, the Owls go to 24-16 overall and 12-9 in the NE10.

Steve Phillips picked up his 21st career win with a relief appearance in the second game of the doubleheader. Phillips is now tied with Herny Lee '04, Scott Bannon '96, Rit Lacomis '99 and Justin Cox '09 for the fifth-most wins in program history. He also recorded his 218th career strikeout to move into fourth place in SCSU history. In addition to Phillips path to the record book, Jack Drewry became the second player in program history to play in 200 career games. He now stands at 201 for his career, trailing Mike DeMartino's '22 record of 204 with three regular-season games remaining.

Brennan Staubley had a five-hit afternoon after going 3-for-5 in the first game and 2-for-3 in the second game. Brady Chernovetz was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the second game while Jake Gruttadauria and Derrick Jagello had three hits on the day.



Game 1: Assumption 16, SCSU 8
Brennan Staubley came within a home run of hitting for the cycle after collecting a single, double and triple as part of a 3-for-5 day. Staubley also had a RBI and run scored. The top four hitters of the Owls' lineup combined to go 12-for-20 as Spencer Chard was 2-for-5 with  a RBI and two runs scored while Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-6 with a RBI and Jack Drewry also drove in a run while going 2-for-5. Derrick Jagello was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer while Izaiah Walker also homered for the Owls.

Jagello's two-run dinger came in the 4th inning and dug the Owls out of a 6-0 hole with their first runs of the day. Assumption built a 13-2 lead before Southern plated three runs in the 6th. Chard drove in Chad Fedeli before Staubley doubled to score Jagello. Gruttadauria also drove in a run in the inning.

Walker's sixth home run of the year came in the 6th inning. Drewry had a Rbi single in the 8th while Patrick Dillon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Game 2: SCSU 7, Assumption 3
Spencer Fox pitched five strong innings before leaving the game with a no-decision. Fox was clubbed for four runs on four hits while he also struck out eight batters against one walk.
In the 4th inning, Staubley led off with a single before moving to second on Gruttadauria's ground out. After Drewry walked, Dillon singled up the middle to load the bases. Staubley came home to put the Owls on the board on a fielder's choice by Walker. With runners on the corners, Walker stole second while Drewry snuck home to tie the gameat 2-2. Assumption took a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer.

In the 5th, Brady Chernovetz led off with a single before moving to second on a walk and taking third on a failed pick off attempt. Staubley then singled to bring Chernovetz home to give the Owls a 3-2 lead. In the 6th, Chernovetz came up big with a two-out double that scored Walker to tie the game at 4-4.

In the 7th, Staubley walked to lead off the inning before Gruttadauria doubled to the left-center gap. After Drewry was intentionally walked to load the bases, Dillon worked a four-pitch walk to score pinch-runner Jake Chacho with the go-ahead run. After a pitching change, Walked drew another walk to force Gruttadauria as Southern took a 6-4 lead. Chernovetz then added a sacrifice fly to give Southern a 7-4 lead.

Southern Connecticut will wrap up the regular season with a  three-game series at Pace on May 2-3 in Pleasantville, N.Y.
