GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball fell to Adelphi University, 11-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 16-11 and an NE10 record of 3-3 and the Panthers improved to an overall record of 16-13 and an NE10 record of 8-5.
Jack Drewry led the Owls with a homerun, two hits and three RBI.
Brennan Staubley scored a team-best of two runs, as
Derrick Jagello had two hits and scored a run against the Panthers.
Izaiah Walker scored a run and had a hit, as
Spencer Chard and
Jake Gruttadauria each had an RBI. On the mound,
Colin Blake threw three strikeouts, while giving up five runs and nine hits against Adelphi.
Adelphi took an early lead in the first two innings, however, in the top of the third,
Derrick Jagello hit a double then
Jake Gruttadauria hit a sacrifice fly to left field, to bring Jagello home for the Owls' first run of the game. After that,
Jack Drewry singled to right field, as
Brennan Staubley came home to score the second run of the game, to cut the Panthers' lead to 3-2.
In the sixth inning, Walker advanced to first after being hit by a pitch, to start the rally for the Owls. A few batters later,
Aidan Hyams was hit by a pitch, as Walker advanced to second then stole third. After that, Jagello was walked as the Owls loaded the bases. After a pitching change for Adelphi,
Spencer Chard was hit by a pitch to advance Walker home for their third run of the day.
The Panthers hit well as they scored six runs throughout the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, to take a 11-3 lead. In the top of the ninth, with two outs, the Owls looked to make a comeback with a homerun by Drewry, as he had two RBI, with Staubley coming across home plate too, as they cut Adelphi's lead to 11-5. Walker then singled to left center, but the Panthers held on to clinch the victory over the Owls.
The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn. against University of New Haven.
