SCSU Baseball Defeats New Haven, 6-4

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated New Haven, 6-4, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Frank Viera Field in West Haven, Conn. With the win, the Owls improved to 17-11 overall and 6-4 in the conference while New Haven dropped to 16-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play.

Spencer Fox improved to 3-3 on the season while also picking up his second win against New Haven in as many starts. Fox held the Chargers to one run on three hits over six innings while striking out five. Steve Phillips picked up a save after entering the game with the tying run on deck before retiring the final two batters of the game.

At the plate, Spencer Chard was 4-for-6 with a RBI, runs scored and a stolen base while Patrick Dillon was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-5 with two walks while also scoring twice while Derrick Jagello had two hits and a RBI. Jake Gruttadauria also drove in a run for the Owls.

Southern got on the board in its first at-bat when Chard led-off the game with a single and moved to second on a walk to Jake Gruttadauria. Chard then tagged-up on Jack Drewry's fly ball to right and scored on a base hit by Patrick Dillon to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Chad Fedeli singled on the first pitch of the inning and then went to second on a failed pick-off move. After the next batter was retired, Fedeli stole third before Derrick Jagello drove him in with a single to give Southern a 2-0 lead.

On the mound, Fox held New Haven scoreless on the Chargers first trip through the batting order. New Haven struck for a run in the bottom of the first to cut Southern's lead to 2-1. Fox pitched two more scoreless innings before exiting the game.

In the top of the sixth inning, Jagello walked and went to second on a wild pitch, and then stole third. After Brennan Staubley walked, Gruttadauria hit a hard-hit ball inside the third base bag for a double that scored Jagello. Patrick Dillon then drove in Gruttadauria and Staubley to give the Owls a 5-1 lead. Southern scored again in the seventh when Fedeli walked, Zak Droukas bunted him over and Jagello singled to move Fedeli to third. Chard then doubled to score Fedeli and give the Owls a five-run lead, 6-1.

New Haven threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Jace Alvino, who pitched two scoreless innings heading to the ninth, retired the first batter of the inning before the next three reached base. He then gave up a single that scored a run before Phillips came on in relief. Phillips gave up a hit that plated two runs, but was able to retire the next two batters to end the game.
