SCSU Baseball Falls To Pace, 6-5, In Extra Innings

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost the first game of its three-game Northeast-10 Conference series at Pace, 6-5 in 10 innings. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 24-17 overall and 12-10 in NE10 play while Pace improved to 22-20 overall and 10-12 in conference action.

Brennan Staubley was 2-for-4 with four RBI with a two-run home run. Spencer Chard was 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored while Chad Fedeli was 1-for-3 and scored the tying run in the top of the 9th. Jace Alvino took the no-decision after going 5 2/3 without giving up a hit.

Southern got on the board early when Spencer Chard led off the game with a double down the left field line. Brennan Staubley then turned on the third pitch of his at-bat and crushed a two-run homer deep over the left field wall to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

In the 2nd, Chad Fedeli hit a line drive up the middle after the first batter of the inning for the Owls was retired. Jake Chacho drew a walk before the next batter was also retired. Chard then reached on an error by Pace's third baseman to load the bases before Staubley hit a line drive to left-center that scored Fedeli and Chacho to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Alvino worked through the Setters lineup, allowing just three base runners – all on walks – as he took a no-hitter into the 6th. Alvino received stellar defense behind him including a stab up the middle by Dillon and a some elite glovework at first by Jack Drewry. Alvino went 5 2/3 behind Pace recorded its first hit. It was the 7th that proved disastrous for Alvino as he gave up three runs before Keegan Daigle gave up two as Pace took a 5-4 lead heading to the 8th.

In the top of the 9th, Fedeli was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zak Droukas. After the next batter was retired, and down to their last out, Chard lined a single up the middle to score Fedeli with the tying run. Steve Phillips retired the Setters offense in order in the bottom of the 9th to send the game to extra innings. Pace manufactured a run on two hits in the bottom half of the inning for the walk-off win.

Southern and Pace will meet again in a NE10 doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 at 11 a.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
