SCSU Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Pace, NE10 Tournament Field Set

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut baseball dropped a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Pace, losing the first game, 5-0, and the second game, 3-2 in a game that was stopped due to inclement weather. The Owls finish the regular-season at 24-19 overall and 12-12 in the NE10 and will be the No. 3 seed in the NE10 Championship Tournament which begins on Tuesday, May 6. The Owls will head back to Pleasantville to take on No. 2 Pace in the NE10 First Round.

In addition to the doubleheader, the day featured yet another milestone for a Southern Connecticut student-athlete. Jack Drewry suited up for career games 203 and 204, tying him with Mike DeMartino for the most games played in program history. With the Owls set to play on Tuesday, Drewry's 205th game would be a new program record.

GAME 1: Pace 5, Southern Connecticut 0
The Owls bats never got going in this game as they managed just five hits in a scoreless front end of the doubleheader. Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-5 with a double while Zakary Droukas was 2-for-3. Colin Blake took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 3 1/3 before Jaylen Cruz pitched the final 4 2/3, allowing two runs on five hits.

GAME 2: Pace 3, Southern  Connecticut 0 (7 Inn.)
The Owls took the hard-luck loss in a game that featured two lightning delays until it was eventually ended when hail began falling on Pace's turf. Jack Drewry was 1-for-4 with a run scored while Brady Chernovetz was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. Droukas was also 1-for-2 in the game.

After Pace scored the game's first run in the bottom of the 1st, Chernovetz singled to lead off the 3rd inning. Derrick Jagello's base hit moved Chernovetz to second before Spencer Chard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brennan Staubley then hit a fly ball to center that scored Chernovetz to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 4th, Drewry led off with a single before Patrick Dillon walked. Izaiah Walker then bunted the runners over before Fedeli worked a walk to load the bases. Chernovetz reached on a fielder's choice when his ground ball to third allowed Drewry to score and give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

On the mound, Spencer Fox settled in to retired 12 straight batters through the 5th inning and into the 6th. With one out in the 6th, he hit a batter before the next batter poked a two-run homer to give Pace a 3-2 lead.

The game was delayed before the start of the 7th and then again midway through the home team's at-bats before it was eventually called off with one out in the bottom of the inning.
