SCSU Volleyball Defeated by Mercy, 3-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut volleyball fell to Mercy University, 3-0, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. The Mavericks improved to an overall record of 3-1 while the Owls dropped to an overall record of 4-2. 

Kerrigan Habing had a team-best of four kills while Victoria Pascual and Sarah Stark both had three kills. Madi Roar led the Owls with nine assists and Kimi Mitchell had five. Sarah Henault recorded a team-best of eight digs while Habing had seven and Roar had six. Sydney Bennett had a team-best of three blocks and Kimi Mitchell had two blocks. Dylan Marney and Henault recorded a team-best of two service aces against the Mavericks.
 
In the first set, the Owls started off with multiple leads, with aces by Sarah Henault and kills by Kerrigan Habing and Sydney Bennett. Southern earned their biggest lead of the match, 12-8; however, Mercy began their comeback. Steadily, the Mavericks worked their way towards the lead with a 15-15 tie. Both teams battled it out for the rest of the set, trading the lead and tying the score, back and forth they went. The Owls managed to tie the score again at 24-24 but the Mavericks got the first set victory with a scoreline of 26-24.
 
In the second set, Mercy continued with the momentum that they started with in the first set with a 3-1 lead. Southern put points on the board to tie the score before the Mavericks would pull away again. The Owls looked to make a comeback; nevertheless, Mercy stayed in control to take the second set, 25-17.
 
In the third set, it was back and forth between Mercy and Southern, early on due to kills from Katie Bardak and Sarah Stark. However, the Mavericks regained control of the match where they finished out the last set, 25-12 and picked up a 3-0 victory over the Owls.
 
The Owls will travel to Philadelphia, P.A. for a non-conference tri-match against host, Jefferson at 11:00 a.m. and against Millersville at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20.
