Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Southern Connecticut volleyball fell to Jefferson, 2-3 and defeated Millersville, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tri-match at Jefferson. The Owls improved to an overall record of 5-3, the Rams improved to 5-3 and the Marauders dropped to 4-8.
MATCH ONE: SCSU 2, JEFFERSON 3
Elena Bianchi and
Kerrigan Habing recorded a team-best of 12 kills and
Sydney Bennett had 10 kills. Habing had her first double-double as Owl and first double-double of the day with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Madi Roar totaled a team-best of 25 assists, while
Kimi Mitchell tied her career-best of 21 assists and
Sarah Henault had four assists. Henault had a team-best of 19 digs,
Victoria Pascual had 15 and
Dylan Marney had 14 digs.
Sarah Stark and
Sydney Bennett both had four blocks while
Elena Bianchi added three. Aleicyah Brodley recorded a career-best of three service aces, Henault and Marney both had two aces against the Rams.
In the first two sets, it was a battle between both the Rams and the Owls. With multiple lead changes and momentum switches, Jefferson rallied to win the first set, 25-22. In the second, the Owls worked hard to tie the game at 12-12, which was sparked by a kill from
Elena Bianchi, an attack error by Jefferson and a service ace by
Aleciyah Brodley. Then, Jefferson went on a run of their own to win the second set, 25-22.
In the third set, Southern looked to make a comeback as they worked to build a lead over Jefferson. Their largest lead of the match was 17-9, with a kill by
Victoria Pascual and an assist by
Kimi Mitchell. The Rams put a few more points on the board; however, the Owls kept their momentum going with kills from Bianchi, Mitchell, Habing and an attack error from Jefferson, to win the third set, 25-13.
In the fourth set, both teams went back and forth for control of the match. It was Southern who began to pull away and kept the advantage going, due to a service ace by Pascual and a kill by Stark to win the set, 25-19 and force a fifth set. In the final set, it was an intense battle between the Rams and Owls with each team tying the game and regaining the lead. After Southern had the 8-6 advantage, Jefferson went on a run to finish the match, 15-10 and picked up a 3-2 battle victory over Southern.
MATCH TWO: SCSU 3, MILLERSVILLE 2
Kerrigan Habing recorded her second-straight double-double of the day with a team-best and career-best of 19 kills and 13 digs.
Victoria Pascual had her first double-double as an Owl, with a career-best of 16 kills and 18 digs.
Sydney Bennett totaled 11 kills and four blocks.
Sarah Stark led the Owls with a team-best of seven blocks and
Elena Bianchi had six blocks. Henault led with a team-best of 22 digs while
Dylan Marney added nine. Henault also had a team-best of three service aces and Marney had two aces.
Madi Roar recorded a team-best of 28 assists and
Kimi Mitchell had 21 assists against Millersville.
In the first set, the Owls started off with a 6-1 lead, with a kill by Bennett and an assist from Roar. After that, they continued with their strong momentum to keep control of the match as they powered through towards the end of the set with kills by Pascual and Habing, and blocks from Bianchi and Stark, to take the first set, 25-18.
In the second set, the Marauders kept the score close with the Owls. Both teams battled back and forth until Southern took a 12-10 lead with another pair of blocks from Stark and Bianchi. Millersville fought back again to regain the lead but Southern took the lead back and worked to finish the set with a scoreline victory of 25-23, with a service ace from
Dylan Marney.
In the third set, the Marauders opened with a commanding lead as the Owls worked to make a comeback. The battle continued between the two teams up until the last point of the set where Millersville got the victory with a close, 25-23 scoreline. In the fourth set, Millersville and Southern went back and forth for every point until the Marauders pulled away to finish out the fourth, 25-19 and forced a fifth set against the Owls.
In the fifth set, each team held the lead for short periods of time until the other would tie and retake the lead back. However, the Owls began to find their rhythm with kills by Habing, Stark, Bianchi and Pascual and a service ace by Mitchell, to finish out the match, 15-10 and pick up a 3-2 battle victory against Millersville.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 in a tri-match at Assumption as they will face Felician at 2:30 p.m. and host, Assumption at 5:00 p.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts.
