SCSU Field Hockey Break Program Records In 11-1 Win Against STAC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut field hockey rolled to an 11-1 win against St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls won their fourth-straight game while also scoring a program record 11 goals. Southern's 11-goal output were its most in a game since the Owls scored 10 against Central Connecticut in 1963.

Taylor Leckey led the way for the Owls with four goals and two assists, which made her the second player in program history, joining Sara Cebry against St. Michael's and Franklin Pierce in 2012, to score 10 points in a single game. Leckey now leads the Owls in goals (8) and points (19) through the Owls' first seven games.

Natalia Fiato scored twice and assisted on another goal while Lindsay Onofrio had a goal and three assists. Ruby Webb also had three assists in the game while Isabella Fölster, Isabella Taylor, Kaiya Mercier and Kate Salvador also scored for Southern. Mercier's goal was the first of her career.  All three Owls goalkeepers made an appearance, with Rachel Miller getting the start. Lyndsay Troisi played two scoreless periods, stopping four shots on goal while Lyla O'Connor made her collegiate debut to start the fourth but did not see a shot on goal.

Fölster opened the scoring with the fourth goal in as many games with Leckey picking up the assist. Keana Criscuolo then setup Fiato with her first goal of the game to give the Owls an early 2-0 lead. Less than a minute later, St. Thomas Aquinas cut the Owls' lead in half, before Southern rolled in nine unanswered goals.

Leckey scored twice before the end of the first period, with Salvador getting on the scoresheet with a redirect from Onofrio in front of the Spartans' goal. Leckey, sitting at a hat trick through the first 30 minutes, added a fourth goal less than five minutes into the second half, while Webb assisted on Leckey's last three goals.

Down the stretch, Fiato added her second on a pass from Onofrio, who scored on a drag flip off a corner set with Fiato and Leckey picking up assists with time expired at the end of the third. Taylor scored her first of the season in the fourth quarter before Mercier scored her first career goal in the closing minutes.

Southern is back in action with a Northeast 10 Conference matchup against Assumption on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
