SCSU Baseball Falls to Southern New Hampshire in Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, CONN- Southern Connecticut Baseball fell in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader to Southern New Hampshire University at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the losses, the Owls fall to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in the NE10, with the wins the Penmen improve to 8-4 overall and 2-0 in the NE10. 

Game One: 

On the mound for the Owls, Cody Heselton got the start tossing 3.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out six. In relief, Jake O'Connor went 2.2 innings allowing 4 runs on six hits while striking out one, Payton Powell followed him throwing two innings allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four. Wes Keayes finished the game tossing a no hit inning with one strikout.  Offensively for the Owls, Matt Scalia led the way going 3-4 with 1 RBI, Devin Pelletier and Alex Cappellucci also had an RBI each. 

Southern New Hampshire got on the board first in the top half of the first inning giving them a 1-0 lead; however, the Owls would respond in the bottom half of the innning, when Devin Pelletier doubled to left field scoring Ryan Fedeli and tying the game up at 1-1. From there, both offenses would go quiet until the fourth inning,, due to the pitching of Owls starter Cody Heselton

In the top half of the fourth, the Penmen broke the game open scoring three runs on two hits and an error bringing their lead to 4-1. The fourth inning would not be the last of the Penmen as they would score one run in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth giving them a 12-1 lead. 

In the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Owls began to respond, when Bam Talavera and Brennan Staubley scored on an error cutting the lead to 12-3. From there, Jake Chacho would score on a ground out by Alex Cappelluci and Matt Scalia would single scoring Augie Albert bringing the deficit to 12-5. The comeback would stop there as the Penmen would take the first game 12-5. 

Game Two:

Jace Alvino got the start for the Owls on the mound, where he threw six innings allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three. In relief, Harry Roy went the final inning allowing no hits. Offensively, Spencer Chard went 2-3 with an RBI and a home run and Brennan Staubley went 1-3 with an RBI. 

In game two, the Owls offense came out hot scoring two runs in the first inning. The first came on a Staubley double that scored Spencer Chard and the second when Pelleteir scored on a wild pitch giving the Owls a 2-0 lead. 

The Penmen would respond immediately in the top half of the second cutting the Owls lead in half to 2-1, but the Owls would expand the lead back up to two when Chard hit a home run in the bottom half of the second bringing the lead up to 3-1. 

Chard's home run, was the last of the Owls scoring as the Penmen would add three runs in the third inning to take their first lead of the game at 4-3 and one in the fourth to expand the lead to 5-3. After three innings of shutout baseball the Penmen earned a 5-3 victory. 

Southern Connecticut is back in action tomorrow Sunday March 15 when they host the Southern New Hampshire Penmen for a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU with games starting at noon and 3 PM.
