NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut baseball lost a pair of games to Southern New Hampshire, 11-7 and 11-3, in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the losses, Southern dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in NE10 play while Southern New Hampshire improved to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
GAME 1 – SNHU 11, SCSU 7
In the first game, Jake Chacho was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Bam Talavera was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Brennan Staubley was also 2-for-4 and Alex Cappellucci drove in two runs. Jaylen Cruz pitched four strong innings in relief, holding the Penmen to a run on two hits while striking out four.
After SNHU plated a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd, Southern answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Karras singled to center before Staubley poked a two-out single to move Karras to third. Both runners scored on a double to right-center field by Chacho before Talavera drove Chacho in from second on a base hit to center field. SNHU got two runs back in their next at-bats to take a 4-3 lead and then scored three more in the top of the 3rd and led, 7-3.
In the 3rd, Devin Pelletier walked to lead off the inning before the next batter was retired and Chacho singled up the middle to move Pelletier to third. He scored on Talavera's sacrifice fly ball to right field to cut SNHU's lead to 7-4. The Penmen made it 10-4 in the 4th before the Owls got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Cappellucci was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and then over to third on a ground ball by Matt Scalia. Spencer Chard then grounded out to second to score Cappellucci and make it 10-5.
In the 5th, Chacho and Talavera both delivered two-out singles, with Chacho going to third on Talavera's hit. After Talavera stole second and the next batter foulded out, Cappellucci then singled to right to bring both runs in and make it 10-7. SNHU came back with another run in the 6th. Cruz finished the game without allowing an earned run.
Game 2 – SNHU 11, SCSU 3
Devin Pelletier was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Brennan Staubley was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
SNHU used a run in the 1st and 3rd to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Connor Powell walked to lead off the inning before SNHU switched pitchers and walked Matt Scalia. Chard then bunted both runners over before the next batter was retired. Pelletier followed with a two-out single that scored Powell and Scalia to tie the game at 2-2. SNHU tacked on five runs in the 4th and then two runs in the 6th, after the Owls pushed a run across in teh bottom of the 5th.
In the 5th, Ryan Fedeli and Pelletier singled with two outs before Staubley drove in Fedeli with a base hit.
Southern is back in action when they host St. Michael's for a four-game series on Saturday, Mar. 21 and Sunday, Mar. 22 with both doubleheaders set for a 12 p.m. start at The Ballpark at SCSU.
