SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against St. Michael's

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against St. Michael's, losing the first game, 8-1, before holding on for a 9-7 win in the second game. With the split, the Owls move to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the NE10 while the Purple Knights go to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

For the day, Brennan Staudley had three hits and scored two runs while Spencer Chard had a pair of hits, three walks and two runs scored.

Game 1 – St. Michael's 8, SCSU 1
St. Michael's used a three-run 2nd inning to jump out to an early lead. The Owls pushed across a run in the bottom half of the inning when Staubley led off with a single and then went to second when Jake Chacho drew a walk. Bam Talavera loaded the bases with a base hit before Alex Cappellucci's sacrifice fly to right field scored Staubley with the Owls' only run.

Cody Heselton took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3. Jake O'Connor pitched well in relief, giving up four runs – only one of which was earned – on two hits while striking out five.

Game 2 – SCSU 9, St. Michael's 7
Jace Alvino picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-1 after holding St. Michael's to four runs over 5 2/3 while striking out six before exiting with a lead. Peter Glidden logged the final 1 2/3 and held onto the lead.

Nick Karras was 2-for-4 with a RBI and the Owls combined for five stolen bases. Spencer Chard was 1-for-1 with a RBI, two runs scored and three walks while Staubley was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. In total, seven different Owls drove in runs while eight of the nine batters scored a run.

Southern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Karras led off with a single through the right side. After Chard walk, both runners moved up on a balk before Devin Pelletier was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chacho reached on a fielder's choice that retired Karras at the plate before Staubley singled through the left side to score Chard. Bam Talavera then hit a sacrifice fly to scored Pelletier before Chacho scored home on a delayed steal by Staubley, who was going from first to second.

After St. Michael's scored twice in the 3rd to pull within in a run, 3-2, the Owls scored twice in the 5th to take a 5-2 lead. Zaid Vohra's groundball to second was misplayed, but the speedy second baseman took an extra base to move into scoring position. He tagged on Karras' fly ball to right and then scored on Chard's single to left. Pelletier followed with a hit to right that saw Chard move to third before he scored on a basehit by Chacho.

The Owls tacked on three more in the 4th. Talavera walked to lead off the inning, stole second and then went to third on a throwing error. Matt Scalia then drew a walk and stole second before a wild pitch allowed Talavera to score and Scalia to go to third. Two batters later, Karras singled up the middle to score Scalia before Chard walked and Pelleiter hit a sacrifice fly to score Connor Powell and give Southern an 8-2 lead.

St. Michael's chipped away in the 6th, scoring five times to make it 8-7. The Owls added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Scalia drove in Staubley. Glidden retired the first two batters he faced in the 7th, walked the next batter and then got the final batter of the game to fly out to right field.

Southern and St. Michael's will meet for the second half of their four-game set on Sunday, March 22. The doubleheader – a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning game – will start at 11 a.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
