SCSU Softball Defeats Molloy, Felician On Final Day Of Florida Trip

Viera, Fla. - Southern Connecticut softball swept a split doubleheader against a pair of non-conference oponents in Viera, Fla., defeating Molloy, 10-6, and Felcian, 10-2.  

For the day, Brianna Pearson was 5-fo-7 with a home run, two doubles, a triple, three RBI and four runs scored. Izzy Ingersoll was 4-for-9 with three runs scored and two RBI while Nadia Cestari was 3-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored. Cheyenne LaTouche also drove in four runs and Olivia Young was 3-for-7 with two doubles and four runs scored.  

GAME 1 – Molloy 10, SCSU 6 
The Owls won a seesaw battle with Molloy, winning in extra innings after a five-run eighth inning pushed Southern to a 10-6 win. Brianna Pearson was 3-fo-3 with a double, home run and three RBI was Izzy Ingersoll was 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Kate Nickerson picked up the win in relief after giving up three runs over 2 2/3 while scattering five hits.  

Southern got on the board with two runs in the 1st after Ingersoll led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cheyenne LaTouche. Pearson then followed with a solo shot to left field that gave the Owls a 2-0 lead. Southern took a 4-1 lead in the 5th when Pearson drove in Ingersoll and Nadia Cestari with a double to right center.  

On the mound, Ashley Lewis held Molloy to a single run through five innings. In the 6 th, Nickerson came on to pitch in relief after a pair of runners got on base. Nickerson walked the first batter she faced, then got the second out when the Owls gunned down a runner at the plate. A two-out single pushed two runs across and then Molloy followed with another RBI single to tie the game.  

In the 7th, Ingersoll led off with a single and then went to third on a double by Pearson. She scored on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to short by Angiolini to give the Owls a 5-4 lead. Molloy once-again tied it in the bottom of the 7th to send the game to the 8th tied at 5-5.  

With Pearson starting on second, due to the tiebreaker rule in extra innings, Gianna Iaquinto bunted her over to third. Christina DeNovellis was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, before Samantha LaFemina came in to run for DeNovellis. Olivia Young then lined a double to right field to score Pearson and LaFemina and give the Owls a 7-5 lead. Cestari singled up the middle and moved to second when Young went to third. Ingersoll brought Young in with a single to center and Cestari moved to third. LaTouche's ground ball to second score Cestari with Ingersoll moving to third on the play, before scoring on a RBI single by Karley Austin to give the Owls a 10-5 lead. Molloy scrapped together a run in their final at-bats but Nickerson got a doubleplay and a groundout to end the game.  

Game 2: SCSU 10, Felician 2 
Southern Connecticut defeated Felician, 10-2, in a non-conference matchup in Viera, Fla. Nadia Cestari was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Brianna Pearson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Cheyenne LaTouche drove in two runs while Karley Austin and Sophia Angiolini both had two hits an a RBI. Moira Collins pitched five scoreless innings while holding Felician to three hits for the win.  

In the 2nd, Gianna Iaquinto tripled to lead off the 2nd inning before an Owl struck out and Cestari reached on a fielder's choice. Iaquinto scored on Samantha LaFemina's fielder's choice before Cheyenne LaTouche drove in Cestari and LaFemina with a two-out single to center field to give Southern a 3-0 lead. In the 3rd, Southern tacked on two more runs when Angiolini, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on an error on a ball hit by Olivia Young. Young then stole third after moving to second on the initial play and scored on Cestari's sacrifice fly as the Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Angeliolini picked up another RBI with a double that scored Pearson in the 4th.  

After Felician scored a pair of runs in the 6th, Pearson led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple and scored on Austin's sacrifice fly. Angiolino then grounded out to first before Gabrielle Senerchia walked and Young reached on an error. Cestari drove both runners in with a single as the Owls picked up the 10-2 walk-off win.  

Southern will return North to host Southern New Hampshire for a four-game Northeast-10 Conference series on Friday, Mar. 20 and Saturday, Mar. 21 at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
