NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut State University dropped a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Saint Anselm, 10-4 and 9-0, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the losses, Southern dropped to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm improved to 7-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
The game was scheduled to be played in Manchester, N.H. but had to be moved to New Haven due to field conditions. As a result, Saint Anselm served as the home team for the doubleheader.
GAME 1 – Saint Anselm 10, SCSU 4
Brennan Staubley was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored and Ryan Fedeli was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Bam Talavera was also 1-for-4 with a RBI.
Southern took a 1-0 lead when Spencer Chard led off the game with a double, and then went to third on a wild pitch. Talavera's ground ball between third and short scored Chard and gave the Owls an early lead.
In the 4th, Staubley led off the inning with a single to left field before the next two batters were retired. Alex Cappellucci then reached on an error before Fedlei drove in Staubley before Cappellucci scored on an error to tie the game at 3-3. Saint Anselm struck for five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
In the top of the 9th, Matt Scalia led off the inning with an opposite field home run – his first homer of his collegiate career.
GAME 2 – Saint Anselm 9, SCSU 0
Bailey Goss took the loss despite pitching four solid innings in which he held Saint Anselm to two runs on five hits, but got into trouble in the top of the 5th.
Southern and Saint Anselm will play the final two games of their four-game set on Sunday, March 29 at Endicott College's North Field in Beverly, Mass.
