SCSU Baseball Bests American International 6-5

Springfield, Mass.—Southern Connecticut baseball bested American International College 6-5 in a Northeast 10 conference match-up in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Owls move to 10-22 overall and 6-16 in the NE10, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 13-22 overall and 9-14 in the NE10.
 
Colin Blake got the start on the mound for the Owls. Blake tossed five innings and allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits while striking out two. In relief, Cody Heselton came in and threw three innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two. Johnny O'Brien came in for the ninth and shut the door allowing one run on one hit, while striking out one.
 
Offensively for the Owls, Brennan Staubley once again led the way going 4-for-5 with and RBI and a home run. Along with Staubley, three other Owls had an RBI in Nick Karras, Alex Cappellucci and Ryan Fedeli.
 
After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Owls responded in the third with two runs of their own. The inning began with back-to-back singles by Matt Scalia, Cappellucci. After an error that allowed Scalia to advance to third, Fedeli drove him in with a single of his own, to give the Owls their first run of the game. From there, Karras grounded into a double play which scored Cappellucci tying the game up at 2-2.
 
In the top of the 4th inning, the Owls bats added another run. The inning began with a single by Staubley. After a Pelletier walk, Cappellucci singled to left driving in Staubley to give the Owls their first lead of the game at 3-2.
 
The following inning, the Owls added another run. The inning began with a single by Bam Talavera. From there, Talavera stole second and third and then scored on a throwing error to extend the Owls lead to 4-2.
 
In the 6th inning, the Owls struck again. The offense for the inning began with two outs, when Fedeli waked and then stole second to get himself into scoring position. Karras singled to center, scoring Fedeli extending the Owls lead to 5-2.
 
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Yellow Jackets answered scoring one run to cut the lead down to 5-3.
 
After letting up a run in the previous half inning, the Owls answered in the top of the 7th inning. The run came on a solo home run by Brennan Staubley to give the Owls a 6-3 lead. This was Staubley's eighth home run on the season, which has him ranked 6th in the NE10 in home runs.
 
Staubley's home run was the last of the Owls offense for the day, as they held on after giving up a run in the 8th and 9th innings to take a 6-5 win. Southern Connecticut is back-in-action on Saturday April 18th when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on Pace University in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
