SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader Against Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. - Southern Connecticut baseball split a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce, winning game one 8-5 before dropping game two 7-0. The Owls move to 13-26 on the season and 9-20 in Northeast 10 Conference play.

Nick Karras and Devin Pelletier both homered in the first game of the doubleheader. Pelletier led the team in hits on the day with three. Matt Scalia and Alex Cappellucci both worked two walks, with Cappellucci also going 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts.

GAME 1

Devin Pelletier led the way offensively in Game 1 for the Owls, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and one run scored. Nick Karras also homered, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Bam Talavera and Alex Cappellucci each recorded multi-hit days. Six different Owls scored in the game.

After leaving four runners on base across the first three innings, the Owls kicked off the scoring in the top of the 4th. Alex Cappellucci walked, stole second, then advanced to third and scored on back-to-back groundouts, with Ryan Fedeli picking up the RBI.

Franklin Pierce answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 4th, but the Owls regained their lead in the next inning when Devin Pelletier drove in Bam Talavera, who reached on a double.

Southern would add more in the top of the 6th. A single from Matt Scalia and a walk from Ryan Fedeli set the stage for Nick Karras, who drove a three-run home run to right field to extend the Owls' lead 5-1.

Peter Glidden was great on the mound for the Owls, allowing only one run in the first five innings. He ran into some trouble in the bottom of the 6th, allowing a home run and a couple of hits to cut the Owls' lead 5-3. Ultimately, he would throw five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out four batters. Jaylen Cruz would escape the sixth by inducing a double play.

Once again, Southern's bats responded, with Devin Pelletier blasting a home run to lead of the 7th inning.

The Ravens would cut the lead to one in the bottom of the 8th after scoring two unearned runs. Payton Powell would replace Cruz and shut the door allowing only one hit and striking out two to give the Owls a 6-5 win.

GAME 2

Brennan Staubley led the way offensively in Game 2, going 1-for-2 with a double and a hit-by-pitch. Spencer Chard and Jake Chacho were the only other Owls to record hits. Matt Scalia walked twice.

Bailey Goss got the start for the Owls, and was clean through three innings. The Ravens broke out in the bottom of the 4th, scoring five runs off five hits. They would add two more in the 5th by way of a two-run homer, bringing the score to 7-0, where it would stay for the rest of the game.

Goss would go the distance, throwing six innings, striking out four.

The Owls will wrap up the series against Franklin Pierce tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
