Staubley Powers SCSU Baseball to Sweep of Franklin Pierce


RINDGE, N.H. - Southern Connecticut baseball took home both games of their doubleheader against Franklin Pierce, winning game one 12-6 before a wild 16-14 victory in game two. The Owls improve to 15-26 on the season and 11-20 in Northeast 10 Conference play. 

Brennan Staubley was dominant against his former school, going 8-for-11 (.727) across the two games with two home runs, two doubles, eight RBI, and three runs scored. His go-ahead, three-run homer in the top of the 9th inning in game two clinched the sweep. Matt Scalia went 5-for-6 (.833) with two walks, two doubles, and three runs scored, while Jake Chacho scored six runs, going 5-for-8 (.625) with three walks. Alex Cappellucci drove in five runs, and Bam Talavera stole three bases and scored four runs. 



GAME 1

The Owls' offense exploded for 12 runs and 17 hits in game one. Jake Chacho led the way, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bam Talavera and Brenna Staubley both went 3-for-5 with a double apiece. Staubley drove in two runs and scored one, while Talavera drove in one run and scored two, adding a stolen base. Matt Scalia scored two runs, going 2-for-3, and Aidan Hyams scored three runs. 

Colin Blake got the start for the Owls and earn the win, allowing six runs (five earned) and striking out four batters over 5.2 innings pitched. Johnny O'Brien threw 1.1 hitless innings in relief, striking out three batters. 

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Bam Talavera singled, then stole second to move into scoring position. It was Talavera's 17th stolen base of the season, which leads the team. Alex Cappellucci drove the run in with a single to center field. Southern added another in the top of the 2nd when Matt Scalia drove in Aidan Hyams. 

Franklin Pierce responded in the bottom of the 2nd, plating two runs against Colin Blake to tie the game 2-2. The Owls answered right back with two runs in the top of the 3rd, when back-to-back doubles from Brennan Staubley and Devin Pelletier drove in three runs, putting Southern ahead 5-2. 

The Ravens cut the lead back to two runs in the next inning, but Southern's bats stayed hot, scoring another three runs in the 4th. Bam Talavera doubled to drove home Matt Scalia, who hit a double to lead off the inning. The lead would grow to 8-3 after Jake Chacho blasted his eighth home run of the season, scoring two runs. 

The Owls plated two more runs off a throwing error in the 5th, and added another two in the 6th off a sacrifice fly from Scalia and a wild pitch. 

Franklin Pierce would score three more against Blake in the 5th and 6th innings, but Johnny O'Brien would enter in relief and record the final four outs without allowing a hit, securing a 12-6 win. 

GAME 2

The second game of the doubleheader was a raucous affair, with a combined 36 hits between the two teams and runs scored in every inning. Brennan Staubley excelled, going 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double, six RBI, and two runs scored. Alex Cappellucci went 4-for-6 with a home run of his own, also driving in four runs and scoring four runs. Matt Scalia reached base in all five plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI and a run scored. Jake Chacho walked three times and scored four runs, and Bam Talavera stole two bases. 

Jake O'Connor started on the mound for the Owls, striking out three batters over three innings and allowing eight runs. Trace Morales threw three and a third innings in relief, allowing four runs. Wes Keayes would earn the win, allowing two runs over the final 2.2 and striking out four batters. 

The Owls struck first again, taking a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning after an RBI double from Staubley and an RBI groundout from Pelletier. The Ravens would answer with a big 2nd inning, scoring five runs off of two hits and a couple of hit-by-pitches. 

Southern would cut Franklin Pierce's lead to one in the top of the 3rd. Three straight singles from Cappellucci, Chacho, and Staubley would load the bases, allowing Pelletier to lift a sacrifice fly to right field and Scalia to drive in another with a single to left. The Ravens would respond in the bottom half of the inning, scoring another three runs off of five hits to take an 8-4 lead. 

Talavera manufactured his own run in the top of the 4th, reaching on an infield single before stealing second, stealing third, and scoring on a wild pitch. The Owls would add one more when Staubley drilled a homer to right-center field with two outs, cutting the Ravens' lead to one. 

The Owls took the lead in the top of the 5th. After tying the game on an errant pickoff attempt to first base, Cappellucci blasted a three-run home run to left field, giving Southern an 11-8 lead. It was the first home run of Cappellucci's collegiate career. 

A three-hit bottom of the 5th would bring home two runs for Franklin Pierce, cutting the Owls' advantage to one run. The Ravens would take a 12-11 lead on a two-run ground-rule double in the bottom of the 6th. 

Zaid Vohra doubled to lead off the 7th, and would be driven in by Cappellucci to tie the game. Spencer Chard would put the Owls in front in the top of the 8th with an RBI single, but the Ravens would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. 

The Owls trailed 14-13 heading into their final at-bats. Cappellucci doubled and  Chacho walked, putting two men on for  Staubley, who launched his second home run of the game over the left field fence. The go-ahead, three-run homer, which was Staubley's tenth of the season, gave Southern a 16-14 lead, which Keayes would hold in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Owls the doubleheader sweep. 

The Owls will return home for their final series of the year next weekend, taking on Assumption on May 1st and 2nd.
