SCSU Baseball Splits With Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Assumption, losing the first game, 12-3, before responding with a 17-8 win in the second game. Southern moved to 16-27 overall and 12-21 in NE10 play while Assumption is now 12-32 overall and 8-26 in the NE10.

Ryan Fedeli was 4-for-7 with a RBI and three runs scored while Brennan Staubley was 4-for-7 with two RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Fedeli was 3-for-4 in the first game and 1-for-3 with three runs in the second game. In Game 2, Staubley was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while blasting his 11th home run of the year and coming within a triple of hitting for the cycle. Devin Pelletier drove in four runs in the doubleheader including a 2-for-5 showing in the second game that included a two-run homer. Auggie Albert was also 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Jake O'Connor picked up the win in the second game in relief to improve to 1-1 on the season after holding Assumption to one unearned run on three hits over 2 2/3.



GAME 1: Assumption 12, SCSU 3
Payton Powell took the no-decision after holding Assumption to two runs over 5 2/3 while scattering three hits. The game was tied 2-2 going into the 7th inning before Assumption erupted for seven runs and the scored three more in the 9th.

After Assumption took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 5th, Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning. Connor Powell doubled to right center to score Spencer Chard before Bam Talavera singled up the middle to score Powell and tie the game at 2-2. Southern's third run came on Pelletier's fielder's choice that score Jake Chacho. A.J. Martinez made his collegiate pitching debut in the 9th. Martinez struck out the first batter he faced and then retired the next batter on a come-backer to the mound.

GAME 2: SCSU 17, Assumption 9
A back-and-fourth batter saw the Owls come out on top thanks to an eight-run sixth inning. Pelletier gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when he doubled to left to score Alex Cappellucci. Assumption took a 4-1 lead in the top of the 4th before Southern regained the lead with a four-run bottom half of the inning.

In the 4th, Staubley led off the inning with a line drive over the left-center field wall to cut the Greyhounds' lead in half, 4-2. Chard then reached on a fielding error and was pinch-ran for by Fedeli. After Albert ground-out, which moved to Fedeli to second, Aidan Hyams singled to right to move Fedeli to third. Matt Scalia then followed with a base-clearing triple that tied the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Cappellucci doubled to right score score Scalia and give the Owls a 5-4 lead.

Assumption responded again, scoring five times in the top of the 5th to take a 9-4 lead. In the bottom of the 5th, Chacho walked to lead off the inning before scoring on a double by Staubley. Fedeli then reached on an error  that moved Staubley to third. Albert singled up the middle to score Fedeli and make it 9-7. After Hyams bunted both runners over, Scalia was retired for the second out of the inning. Freshman infield Zaid Vohra followed with a singled to left that scored two runs and tied the game at 9-9.

After Jake O'Connor held Assumption off the board in the 6th, the Owls bats erupted for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Owls' big inning was highlighted by a three-run homer by Albert and a two-run dinger by Pelletier with Scalia, Fedeli and Cappellucci also driving in runs.

Southern and Assumption are slated to meet again on Saturday, May 2 at 12 p.m. for the final two games of the regular season. The Owls will hold Senior Day Festivities at 11:20 a.m.
