Courtney Henchcliffe Named East Region Runner of the Year as SCSU Track & Field Takes Home Three Regional Awards

Southern Connecticut men's and women's outdoor track & field took home three regional honors, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Courtney Henehcliffe was named the NCAA Division II East Region Runner of the Year, John Wallin was named the East Region Men's Coach of the Year, and Melissa Stoll Funaro was named the East Region Women's Coach of the Year.

Courtney Henchcliffe adds another award to her historic 2025-2026 season. Last month, she completed a three-season sweep, becoming the first athlete in program history to receive NE10 Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in the same season. She clinched the final award with a dominant outdoor season, winning the 5000m and placing second in the 1500m at the 2026 NE10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She followed up that performance by winning the 5000m at the 2026 New England Championships, helping the Owls to a second-place finish. She also broke the outdoor program record in the 5000m with a time of 17:04.82. She was a four-time Athlete of the Week recipient this season, and is the second straight Owl to win the award after Hannah Caiola won it in 2025, and the third overall (Letecia Taylor, 2010).

Head Coaches John Wallin and Melissa Stoll Funaro both took home Regional Coach of the Year honors. It is the second consecutive year both coaches have won the award. Stoll Funaro takes home her third regional COTY honoo after earning NE10 Coach of the Year honors, sweeping the award for all three seasons for the first time in program history. Wallin earns his ninth consecutive and 14th overall regional Coach of the Year nod. Southern has won the award 15 out of the 18 times it has been awarded.
