SCSU Men's Soccer falls to Mercy 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University fell to Mercy University in Sunday's matchup at Jess Dow Field, improving the Mavericks to 3-1-1, and the Owls to 0-2-2.

Andrew Buchanan gave the Owls the early advantage, scoring just 2:49 into the match. Roger Fontdegloria and Gísli Ágústsson assisted, with Buchanan finishing for his first goal of the season to make it 1-0.

Mercy's Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen answered in the seventh minute, leveling the score at 1-1.

SCSU controlled the first half statistically, out shooting Mercy 5-4 and earning all five of its corner kicks before halftime. Kasper Murzinski led the Owls' attack with three shots, while Ágústsson and Jayson Dumont each forced saves from Mercy goalkeeper Sean Green.

After a foul in the box, Darwesh Lund-Iversen converted a penalty kick at 61:51 for his second goal of the game and eighth of the season, giving Mercy the 2-1 lead.
Goalkeeper Héctor Díez Viota finished the game with three saves and faced sustained pressure in the second half, including stops on Darwesh Lund-Iversen in the 61st minute and Marcos Landivar in the 74th minute.

The Owls face Franklin Pierce University next on Friday, Sept. 17th at 7:00PM at Jess Dow Field for their NE10 Conference opener.
