SCSU Men's Soccer Tops St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-0, For Second-Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer picked up its second straight victory with a 2-0 shutout of St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. The Owls record moves to 2-2-4, and the Spartans fall to 3-2-3.

The Owls controlled much of the match, outshooting St. Thomas Aquinas 10-6 overall and putting six shots on goal compared to two for the Spartans.

Izan Vila opened the scoring for SCSU, finding the back of the net for his first goal of the match. Amos Bignotti recorded the assist on the goal. Ágústsson added to the Owls' lead with his second goal in as many games. After scoring the game-winner in Southern's 1-0 victory over Saint Anselm, Ágústsson continued his strong stretch against the Spartans. He finished the night leading the Owls with four shots, including three on goal.

Southern also received scoring chances from Ferran Briones, Andrew Buchanan and Vila, who each put a shot on goal.

Diego Flores played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped both shots he faced to preserve the shutout. St. Thomas Aquinas managed six total shots, with Jalen Moni and Nico Gallegos accounting for the Spartans' two shots on goal. The shutout was Flores' second straight and his ninth career clean sheet. The sophomore has not allowed a goal over Southern's last 180 minutes of action after making five saves in the Owls' 1-0 win against Saint Anselm.

Southern's defense once again limited its opponent's opportunities, holding St. Thomas Aquinas to just two shots on goal throughout the match. With the victory, Southern Connecticut State has now won back-to-back matches, both by shutout, after defeating Saint Anselm 1-0 in its previous outing.

The Owls return to Northeast 10 Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Colchester, Vt. to face Saint Michael's College at 1 P.M.
