NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Nicole Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) of the gymnastics team and senior Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for January.
Pruchnik made an immediate impact in her first three collegiate competitions with the Owls during the month of January. Southern Connecticut also posted a 5-0 team mark over those outings, including a victory over Division I Yale. Pruchnik was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for her efforts in the Owls' sweep of Yale and Ithaca. She was first with a 9.725 on the floor exercise and also captured first place on the vault with a 9.55. The following week, she was tabbed as the ECAC Gymnast of the Week as she earned first place marks on the floor exercise (9.75) and beam (9.475) and was the runner-up on the vault.
Hamlet scored in double digits in all eight games in the month for the Owls, who went 6-2 as a team. He averaged 17.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 2.7 assists per contest. Hamlet was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll in each of the four weeks during the month of January. He also currently ranks No. 7 in all of Division II in blocked shots/game, and is also tops in the NE-10 in that department and No. 3 overall in points/game.
