NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Nicole Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) of the gymnastics team and junior Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Williams posted his third consecutive double-double in NCAA Tournament action with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the Owls’ Sweet 16 contest against Southern New Hampshire. Williams was named to the Regional All-Tournament Team for his performance in NCAA action.
Pruchnik helped the Owls set a new team score record at Saturday’s ECAC Championship. She matched the school record on the floor exercise with a 9.9. Pruchnik tied a mark that she also set last year, along with Rebecca Brady in 2012. For her effort, she finished as the runner-up in that event. In addition, she also paced the Owls on the beam with a 9.75 to finish third.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
