NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) of the softball team and senior Michael Cameron (Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Van Alphen played a pivotal role in a 5-2 week for the Owls. She posted a 3-0 record with a 1.07 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched. Van Alphen tossed a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts in a 2-0 win over New Haven to open the week. The next day, she hurled a complete game with six strikeouts in a w win over AIC. Van Alphen closed the week by meriting one run over 5.2 innings before leaving with an injury in the victory over Queens on Saturday.
Cameron captured first place in both the shot put and the discus throw at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational over the weekend. His toss in the shot put of 16.35 meters was a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. He also registered a throw of 47.00 meters in the discus.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
