NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) of the softball team and freshman Jack Brown (Lyndon Center, Vt.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Cockrill capped her collegiate career in style last week, as she registered a 2-0 mark with a 1.00 earned run average and 20 total strikeouts. She opened the week by throwing a one-hitter in a 4-0 shutout at Pace and struck out seven Setters in that contest. Cockrill followed with another gem on Senior Day, as she allowed only two hits and fanned a career-high 13 in a 6-2 win over Bridgeport.
Brown continued his strong rookie campaign by capturing first place in the pole vault at the George Davis Invitational over the weekend. His leap of 4.70 meters just missed a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, but is tops among Northeast-10 Conference participants this spring. Brown’s figure matched a personal-best in that event.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
