WORCESTER, Mass. – Redshirt sophomore tailback
Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) rushed for a career-high 248 yards on 31 carries and matched a career-high with three touchdowns as the Southern Connecticut State University football team claimed a 33-17 victory over Assumption College on Friday night.
The Owls improved to 3-3 and 2-2 in Northeast-10 play with the win. Assumption is now 1-5, 1-4.
Assumption struck first on the opening drive after utilizing a little bit of trickery. The Owls seemed to have the Greyhounds stopped on a three-and-out on the hosts' side of midfield, but a fake punt allowed Assumption to take the ball all the way down to the SCSU 6. Taylor Humphrey then hit Jake Beers on a three-yard pass to give Assumption a 7-0 lead after the PAT.
Southern Connecticut responded with an 11 play, 56-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard field goal from
Charles Gallagher (Hartford, Conn.).
The Owls took the lead for good later in the opening quarter when Freeman found paydirt from 37 yards out.
SCSU then capitalized on an Assumption turnover when Freeman closed a two play, 18-yard drive with a 10-yard scamper. Gallagher then hit the PAT for a 17-7 cushion.
Gallagher added a 22-yard field goal with 8:38 remaining in the half to pad the Owls' lead to 20-7.
Assumption added a 35-yard field goal from Jon Eisele just before the break to cut the deficit to 20-10 at halftime.
The hosts closed the gap to just three points early in the third quarter when Humphrey hooked up with Joey Fabiano on a 70-yard strike that made it 20-17.
The Owls promptly responded by scoring the next two touchdowns. Freeman converted his third of the day, this time from 16 yards out. Then, after an Assumption punt,
Chris Koziol (Ware, Mass.) closed a drive with a 20-yard run.
SCSU is back in action on Friday, October 12 for a 7 p.m. home contest against Pace.
