NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior forward Kate Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) led six Owls in double figures with 27 points on Monday night as the No. 11 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team blew out Felician 106-40 in non-conference action at Moore Fieldhouse. Every SCSU player in uniform hit a field goal on the evening. Crystal Ferrer posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Felician in defeat. With the victory, SCSU improves to 5-1 (3-1 NE-10), while Felician falls to 1-5 (0-1 CACC).
The Owls wasted no time taking a dominating lead in the game, as they opened with a 21-4 run over the contest's first five minutes. The run included seven points from senior guard Michelle Martinik (Masuk, Conn.) as well as six points from sophomore forward
Sarah Houseknecht (Olean, N.Y.). SCSU would also close the half with an 18-2 run over the half's final six minutes to take a 59-18 lead into the lockerroom. The late run was highlighted by eight points on three field goals and a pair of free throws by Lynch.
For SCSU, three players had scored double figures in the first half. Lynch led the way with 16 points, while Martinik and Houseknecht were close behind with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Senior forward Rochelle Johnson (Norwalk, Conn.) led the team with five rebounds in the opening stanza. Martinik handed out four assists while Lynch recorded seven steals.
For Felician, Ferrer led the way with six points on 3-for-5 shooting and added five rebounds in the first half.
It would be more of the same out of the gate in the second half, as SCSU opened the half by scoring the first 16 points over a span of 4:18, including seven points from Lynch. The Owls would push the lead as high as 69 points when a Houseknecht layup with 1:14 remaining made it 106-37. Felician would score the game's final three points to create the 106-40 final
Lynch finished with a game-high 27 points on 11-for-17 shooting and led six Owls in double figures. Martinik added 18 points on 5-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-10 from three-point range, and 4-for-5 at the free-throw line. She also tied a career high with six assists. Houseknecht matched her career best with 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Junior guard Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) chipped in 11 points and a career-high four assists. Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) collected career highs with eight assists and six rebounds while freshman guard Katie Spydell (Hartford, Vt.) notched a career-best five points and her first career field goal on 2-for-4 shooting, including 1-for-2 from three-point range. Lynch finished with a game-high eight steals.
For Felician, Ferrer chalked up 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting. She also hauled in a game-best 12 rebounds. Amanda Bartee and Janelle Biamonte each cored six points on 2-for-5 shooting for the Golden Falcons.
SCSU shot 39-for-76 (51.3%) from the floor, 10-for-28 (35.7%) from three-point range and 18-for-21 (85.7%) from the free-throw line on the evening.
Felician shot 16-for-45 (35.6%) from the field, 1-for-5 (20.0%) from behind the arc and 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the charity stripe.
SCSU forced 36 turnovers while committing only 10, which led to a 57-7 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Owls also held a 42-14 edge in points in the paint, a 23-11 advantage in second-chance points and a 14-2 edge in fast break points.
For the Owls, it was the first time the team reached the 100-point plateau since Nov. 18, 1995, when they posted a 101-77 victory at Molloy. The last time SCSU scored 100 points at home was Feb. 27, 1979 when they defeated Northeastern 100-62. The 106 points is the most scored by an SCSU team since the 1973-74 season, when they twice posted 109 points in 109-41 and 109-27 victories over Rhode Island and Connecticut, respectively.
The Owls return to action on Thursday, Dec. 6 when they travel to visit Massachusetts-Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Mass.
