NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The tandem of senior quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) and senior wide receiver Chris Bergeski (Mountainside, N.J.) connected nine times for 143 yards and two touchdowns, leading the way for the Southern Connecticut State University football team in its 28-12 win over Assumption on Saturday. The Owls (7-2, 6-1 Northeast-10 Conference) earned a win on Homecoming for their sixth straight victory. Next up for the Owls is the regular season finale on Nov. 8 at AIC, and a win will most likely put SCSU in the NCAA playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
Although Assumption had the first scoring opportunity of the game – it missed on a 23-yard field goal midway through the first quarter – it was the host Owls who finally struck first with 1:51 left in the opening quarter. Roberts found Bergeski on a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Owls in front after the made PAT by Christopher Hazelton (Bristol, Conn.).
Assumption struck next with a touchdown of its own midway through the second quarter. However, the Owls maintained their lead after a missed PAT try.
SCSU extended its lead to 14-6 with a crisp seven-play, 68 yard drive off the ensuing kickoff. Once again, Roberts and Bergeski connected for a score, this time from 26 yards out. The Owls led by that same score heading into halftime.
A strong return off the second half kickoff gave the Owls great field position, and the hosts seemed poised to score again. However, Chris Martino picked off a pass at his own 1 and returned it 99 yards the other way to make it 14-12. Assumption tried a two-point conversion to tie the score, but Martin Manson (Bloomfield, Conn.) intercepted the bid.
Southern Connecticut then put the game away by scoring the next two touchdowns.
Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) padded the lead to 21-12 with a three-yard run midway through the third quarter. The score closed an 11-play, 70 yard drive.
The Owls made it 28-12 early in the fourth when Roberts hit John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) on a five-yard touchdown pass.
Freeman finished with 140 yards on 24 carries for the Owls. Roberts was 22-of-38 for 244 yards and three touchdowns.
Landon Osborn (New Haven, Conn.) and Desmond Lymon (West Haven, Conn.) each had eight tackles, while Manson, James Williams (Plainfield, N.J.) and Kyle Sandberg (Toms River, N.J.) each had an interception.
