FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior shortstop Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) went 4-for-8 with a double and a triple, scored four runs and drove in four more on Sunday afternoon as the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept a neutral-site, non-conference doubleheader from Assumption by scores of 7-0 and 17-3. Junior second baseman Kevin Bowerman (West Haven, Conn.) also went 4-for-8 on the day, scored three runs, collected four RBI and stole two bases. With the wins, SCSU improves to 4-3, while Assumption falls to 1-3.

SCSU chalked up 29 hits over the two games, leading to multiple big innings. In the second game, the Owls scored four runs in each the fourth and ninth innings and racked up six runs in the seventh inning. The only runs SCSU surrendered on the day were three unearned tallies in the bottom of the ninth inning of the second game.

Junior centerfielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) went 3-for-6 on the day with a double, scored three runs, drove in three and stole five bases. Sophomore infielder Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) hit 3-for-7, drove in a pair of runs, scored another and was hit by a pitch. Senior Anthony Fiorillo (New Haven, Conn.) had a fine day as well, as he hit 4-for-7 with three runs scored, two RBI and a walk.

On the mound, senior Nick Carlucci (Franklin, Mass.) pitched eight shutout innings and earned the victory (1-1) for the Owls. The right-hander gave up four hits, walked nobody, hit a batter and struck out 10. In the second game, sophomore Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) was just as brilliant, tossing eight shutout innings en route to a victory (1-0).
