NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team won its first game in the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Saint Anselm. However, the Owls were eliminated in their second game of the day, a heartbreaking 3-2, eight-inning loss to Bryant.
SCSU moved to 25-26 on the season with the split.
The Owls won game one behind a four-hit shutout from senior hurler Jessica Dempsey (Stratford, Conn.).
SCSU provided all of the offense that Dempsey would need in the first inning.
Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) doubled and moved to third on a balk before scoring on a RBI groundout from
Megan Caporossi (North Branford, Conn.).
The Owls added another run in the second. Amanda St. George (Shelton, Conn.) doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.). One out later,
Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) singled to drive in St. George.
SCSU tacked on two runs in the fourth to put the game away.
Melissa Corwin (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Flood strung together back-to-back singles. After a groundout by Lee moved the runners up a base, Caporossi delivered a two-run single that plated both runners.
Meanwhile, Dempsey was masterful against the Hawks and fanned four in the contest.
In game two, Bryant scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.
The Owls made it 2-1 in the third on a solo home run from Iacomini.
SCSU evened the game in the top of the seventh inning. Down to their final out, the Owls received a solo blast from
Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.) to even the score at 2-2.
Unfortunately, Bryant's Ali Chouinard led off the eighth inning with a home run to send the Bulldogs into the championship round.
