SCSU Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Bentley

Waltham, MA-- Southern Connecticut State University softball fell in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader against the Bentley University Falcons. The Owls fall to 20-22 overall and 13-19 in the NE10, while the Falcons improve to 19-29 overall and 14-18 in the NE10. 

Ashley Lewis and Moira Collins both got starts for the Owls in the circle in the doubleheader. In game one, Lewis threw six innings and allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits and struck out two. While in game two, Collins went the distance as she tossed six innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned on six hits and struck out three. Offensively for the Owls, Karley Austin led the way with four hits across both games and Brianna Pearson had an RBI
 
Game 1: Bentley 5, SCSU 1

Ashley Lewis got the start for the Owls in the circle and she threw six innings and allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits and struck out two. Offensively for the Owls, Karley Austin went 2-for-4 and Gianna Iaquinto went 2-for-4. Brianna Pearson had an RBI.  

After the Owls surrendered three runs in the opening frame, they would cut into the lead in the top of the 3rd. The inning began with a lead off triple by Austin. From there, Pearson grounded out to the shortstop, which allowed Austin to score on a close play at the plate and cut the lead down to 3-1.

After a quiet 4th inning, Bentley added to their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning as the Falcons scored two runs on three hits to take a 5-1 lead. Those runs were the last of the game as Bentley took game one 5-1.
 
Game Two: Bentley 3, SCSU 0

In game two, the Owls turned to Moira Collins for her fifth start of the season. Collins went the distance as she tossed six innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned on six hits and struck out three. Offensively for the Owls, Austin led the way as she went 2-for-2. Sophia Angiolini and Samantha LaFemina each had a hit.
 
The Falcons took an early lead in the 1st inning as they scored one run on  a hit batter and an error to take a 1-0 lead. After a quiet 2nd and 3rd inning, Bentley added another run in the bottom of the 4th inning on an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
 
In the 5th inning, the Falcons added another run on a solo home run to expand the lead to 3-0. That was the last of the scoring for the day as Bentley took a 3-0 win in game two.

Southern Connecticut returns home on Friday May 1 to take on Assumption University in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader at the Pelz Field beginning at 2:30pm.
