Southern Connecticut Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Bentley

Waltham, Mass--- Southern Connecticut State University Softball split a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader against Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. The Owls move to an even 20-20 overall and 13-17 in the NE10, while the Falcons move to 17-29 overall and 12-18 in the NE10.
 
Ashley Lewis and Giselle DeLutri each got starts for the Owls. Lewis tossed five innings in game one and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out one. DeLutri went the distance in game two as she tossed 6.2 innings and allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out seven. Delutri added an inning in relief in game one, where she allowed one hit and struck out three on her way to earning a save. This was DeLutri's first save of her Owls career. Along with DeLutri, Moira Collins tossed one inning and allowed no runs on one hit.
 
Offensively for the Owls, Izzy Ingersoll had five hits and one RBI. Olivia Young, Sophia Angiolini, Gianna Iaquinto, Brianna Pearson and Christina DeNovellis all had multiple RBI across the two games. Young also had four hits across both games. 
 
Game One: SCSU 6, Bentley 3

Ashley Lewis got the start in the circle for the Owls as she tossed five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with one strikeout. In relief, Moira Collins threw one inning, and allowed only one hit. DeLutri closed the door as she tossed the final inning and tossed three strikeouts. Offensively for the Owls, Christina DeNovellis led the way going 3-for-3 with a walk and a home run for two RBI. Along with DeNovellis, Iaquinto had multiple two RBI and Ingersoll went 3-for-4. Pearson and Kalliope Stefanidis each had an RBI.
 
After a quiet first two innings, the Owls got the scoring started for the day as they scored three runs in the top of the 3rd inning. The inning began with a lead off home run by Christina DeNovellis. This is Denovellis' second home run as an Owl. The Owls offense continued when after a groundout by Olivia Young, Ingersoll singled. Following Ingersoll, Iaquinto tripled to right field, which scored Ingersoll giving the Owls a 2-0 lead. After Iaquinto, Pearson doubled to left which scored the final run of the inning and gave the Owls a 3-0 lead.
 
After two quiet half innings, Bentley answered in the bottom of the 4th inning as they scored three runs on five hits to tie the game at 3-3.
 
After another quiet inning, the Owls began to threaten in 6th when DeNovellis and Young lead off the inning with back-to-back walks. From there, Ingersoll singled to load the bases. The Owls took the lead when Iaquinto was hit by a pitch which scored DeNovellis and put the Owls back in front 4-3.
 
The Owls added two more in the 7th. The inning began with back-to-back singles by Sophia Angiolini and Nadia Cestari. With two runners on base, the Owls pinch hitter Stefanidis doubled to center and gave the Owls a 5-3 lead. For the Owls final run of the inning, DeNovellis singled to center to expand the lead to 6-3. After three strikeouts from DeLutri, the Owls took a 6-3 win in game one.

Game 2: Bentley 7, SCSU 6
 In game two, Giselle DeLutri got the start and she went the distance as she tossed 6.2 innings and she allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out seven. Offensively for the Owls, Young went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Angiolini went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

After a strong first game, the Owls got the scoring for game two started in the 2nd inning. The inning's offense began with back-to-back singles by Young and Gabrielle Senerchia. This was Senerchia's second hit and second start of the season. After a walk by Iaquinto to load the bases, Pearson walked to score the Owls first run of the day to take a 1-0 lead.

The Owls lead was short lived as the Falcons scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 2-1 lead.

In the 3rd, the Owls added one more run to tie the game. The inning began with a single by Angiolini. After two ground outs by Cestari and DeNovellis, Young singled and drove in Angiolini to tie the game 2-2.

After a quiet 4th inning, the Owls scored again in the top of the 5th inning. The offense for the inning began with a double by Cestari. After a fly out by DeNovellis, Young drove a ball to right field and traded places with Cestari to give the Owls a 3-2 lead.

Bentley answered in the bottom of the 5th inning as they scored one run on two hits to tie the game at 3-3.

The Owls responded in the top of the 6th inning with two runs of their own. After back-to-back two out singles by Pearson and Karley Austin, Angiolini broke the tie with a double to left that scored them both to give the Owls a 5-3 lead.

Bentley tied the game in the bottom of the inning as they scored two runs on three hits to tie the game at 5-5.

With the game tied at 5-5, the Owls broke the tie in the top of the 7th inning. The inning began with a single by Young. After a successful sacrifice bunt by Senerchia that moved Young to second, Ingersoll singled to center which scored Young and gave the Owls a 6-5 lead.

Despite taking the lead in the top of the 7th inning, Bentley answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits to take a 7-6 walk off win.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Sunday April 26 when the Owls continue their four-game set against Bentley University a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader beginning at noon. The Owls then return home on Friday May 1 to take on Assumption University in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader at the Pelz Field beginning at 2:30pm.
