Whitney Martin (Harwinton, Conn.) and Ann Berry (Belfast, Maine) each scored a goal, but the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team was defeated by No. 10 nationally ranked Mansfield University in its season opener on Friday, 6-2.
The Owls are now 0-1 on the season. Mansfield is 1-0.
SCSU actually controlled the play for most of the first half, but was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring opportunities.
The visitors opened the scoring just 3:17 into the game on a goal from Rebekah Brown. Laura Carden then sandwiched a pair of goals – one at 13:04, the other at 23:49 – around a tally from Jaimie Purdy.
Mansfield tallied the first two goals of the second half before the Owls put on a late surge.
Berry then netted her first goal of the year with 22:36 remaining off a scramble in front.
Martin followed just 1:31 later, as she converted a tip off a penalty corner.
Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Sara Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn.) assisted on the goal.
Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) finished with seven saves in goal for the Owls.
The Owls return to action tomorrow at noon for a home contest against No. 4 nationally ranked Shippensburg.
