NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Marek Prezbylek kicked a 25-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining to cap a late rally as the American International College football team pulled out a 13-12 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Friday night at Jess Dow Field. The Owls used a 1-yard touchdown from
John Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) with 3:15 remaining to take a 12-10 lead, but the Yellow Jackets were able to finish out their final drive and secure the win.
The Owls are now 1-2, 0-1 in Northeast-10 play on the year. AIC moved to 2-0, 1-0.
Heavy rain in the area forced both teams into a predominantly run-oriented offense in the first half.
Southern Connecticut took the ball off the opening kickoff – helped by a 44-yard return from
Martin Manson (Bloomfield, Conn.) – and marched down with a seven play, 46-yard drive.
Jarom Freeman (Peekskill, N.Y.) capped the drive with a four-yard run that put the Owls up 6-0 after a missed PAT.
AIC countered with an 11-play, 47 yard drive the concluded with a 32 yard field goal from Prezbylek.
The Owls carried a 6-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
AIC went in front with 7:21 remaining in the third quarter on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Rob Parent to Kertis Hussey. The Yellow Jackets led 10-6 after the successful PAT.
Both teams had trouble moving the ball for the next 15 minutes. However, the Owls were able to capitalize on great field position after a short AIC punt late in regulation.
Southern Connecticut was faced with a 4th and 9 from the AIC 35 with just less than four minutes remaining. Quarterback
Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) hooked up with
Ty Marshall (Ellenwood, Ga.) on a 34-yard catch that brought the ball down to the AIC 1.
On the next play, Wiechman found the end zone to give the Owls the lead at 12-10. However, the ensuing PAT was missed.
The Yellow Jackets then used a 53-yard return on the kickoff to get to the SCSU 28. Six plays later, Prezbylek hit the eventual game-winning field goal.
